    RPG Evolution: When Gamers Retire

If you ever get stateside and want to talk gaming and/or American football let me know! I have been coaching football for over 30 years. I have a retiree in my current gaming group and he plays in at least three other groups and DMs in another. I am a little jealous as retirement is a few years...

What Game Systems Do You Have?

I have way too many. I need to sell some. I used to be really good about selling anything I had not played in a couple of years. I'm way overdue for a purge. D&D 5e Savage Worlds Call of Cthulhu Traveller Runequest WFRP 1e WFRP 2e WFRP 4e That's what I'm keeping - the rest is going up for sale...

D&D General What do you actually like about D&D?

I like the large player base. It's my favorite zero to hero rpg. It's easy to build a long term campaign. Those are the ones specific to D&D - my rpg list of things I like would be much longer.

D&D General How do you know an adventure is "good" just from reading it?

For me, I don't worry about the plot and story - I can make it work on some level for my players. What I look for are cool npcs that the players will love or hate fun and different encounter set-ups, usually related to combat a big challenge (usually the big villain) that has a twist or is...

D&D General Your last adventure in photos.

Some shots of some of my new Egyptian style dungeon pieces. The action shots did not turn out that well, but I'll try again next Sunday. All made with Hirst Arts molds. I'm working on more for next session. I am hoping to complete a large set of the Egyptian style stuff. Players really...

What have you done for your DM/GM at the end of a campaign?

My players have given me several game aids over the years. I usually give them a token of my appreciation at the end of a long campaign. Last time I gave them a book with every adventure we went through. Dice and miniatures are frequently gifts too. The last campaign of any length I played I...

D&D General Making and surviving the break…

I have a steady group of players who will play whatever I am running. I plan on buying the new stuff and trying it - then my group will decide if we like it better than 5e. I've played D&D almost since the beginning, but I skipped 2E (WFRP instead) and only did one campaign of 4e. I ran a...

It's Not Easy to Find a Gaming Group

I used to take a decent group for granted. I too prefer face-to-face, although I do run a short (2 hours) weekly session online for friends across the country. My face-to-face group in 4 hours every Sunday. I have six fairly steady players and eight total - we almost always have at least five at...

D&D General Extra Credits: The History of D&D Hasbro Refused to Learn

Not saying this video does this, (and I am not interested in watching to see if they do), but getting small parts of the history/lore wrong that you know is going to irk fans is a long standing tactic to get better engagement. The hardcore fan can hardly resist commenting to correct the errors...

Long campaigns, Besides D&D and Pathfinder

WFRP 2e also has The Thousand Thrones, which does not hold a candle to The Enemy Within, but qualifies. Runequest has Griffin Mountain - old, but still holds up fairly well IMO.

D&D 5E (2014) How do we know if a KS module is worth it?

There are certain authors/companies I like and will give them the benefit of the doubt. Otherwise, a new publisher better give me a big sample to read. I also like ENWorld's KS Model where it is a preprint order and you get the pdf nearly immediately. I don't fund undeveloped cool ideas.

D&D General So what is high level play like?

I have run a lot of high level D&D - particularly in 3rd and 5th edition. Most of my 5e campaigns go to tier 4 (4 out of the last 5). The game changes in fun ways for us - they very much become super heroes. I agree with what has been said to a point - the game in terms of motivations and...

Advice for new "story now" GMs

I have players who love to pursue motivations and are delighted when I set the table for their PCs. I have players who would much prefer the story happen to them - they want obvious hooks and paths. The good news for me is generally the latter is happy to follow the former and help them out.

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with new DM

Your group runs a very different game than mine, and that's great. However, I think this advice is universal: Don't be afraid to ask for time. If after your pitch is accepted and session zero you need more time than the next regular scheduled session to begin - ask your fellow players for more...
