    D&D 5E (2014) On capstone class features

We have played to twentieth level a few times and I like to run at least one adventure at 20th to allow the players to have fun with their new abilities. The characters remain part of the campaign world, so I would prefer the capstones to be more interesting than powerful.

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Second session in my new campaign. The PCs are contracted with the most famous monster hunting outfit in the Empire. The outfit was started by an epic PC from a previous campaign, which has been a fun connection. Each week the adventure revolves around an unusual beast hunt. The beast is...

D&D General What Product Do You Wish They Sold For D&D

Two things that will not happen, but I would love: Mass Combat rules that are miniatures-based and integrate with 5e. An official epic rulebook with a series of modules.

WotC 2020 Was The Best Year Ever For Dungeons & Dragons

I would assume the older folks are a bit over-represented on ENWorld because it is a forum. The folks I know under 30 rarely, if ever, use forums - they gravitate to Reddit, Twitter, and even TikTok. I'm glad many new people are entering the hobby, even if I am an old grumbler at times!

    D&D General First D&D Character?

Original D&D 1975 Magic-User named Themyu - (I know, I know). Cousin's dungeon found some stairs and went down a few levels without realizing monsters were more dangerous the lower you went. Actually survived a couple of encounters through negotiation and luck and then got capped by a Vampire...

How do you expect high level play to differ from low level play in a high fantasy RPG?

It is hard for me to answer without referring to a game system. In any game, I expect the scale to widen and the stakes will increase. However, my expectations are shaped by the rules. IME - expectations are very different in a zero-to-hero like D&D versus some other system like WFRP or Ars...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D compared to Bespoke Genre TTRPGs

Bespoke is a new word to me - so, I learned something from this thread... Addressing the topic - I don't see it as strictly black and white. I'm a rules matter kind of guy. However, in a D&D campaign I'm not afraid to stretch the framework to accommodate other styles of adventures. I LOVE...

    On number of ignores

My ignore list has been empty for a long time. I am glad it is a feature though. I have been tempted to use it a couple of times - particularly against individuals who ANNOUNCE they are putting someone else on ignore. That rubs me the wrong way - kind of like the GRAND EXIT. I have a good...

D&D General What are your favorite DM Advice Media?

Matt Coville's style seems to match mine. I have not watched his game streams, but the "advice" he gives is solid, if not necessarily all that groundbreaking. I will have to check out some of these other resources. I'm with @el-remmen on actual play streams, but I have forced myself to watch a...

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

A game master who is enthusiastic about their favorite system and is patient with new players can always bring new players into the fold.

    Generic Miniature Painting Thread

You are a machine! I am painting so slowly these days. The quality of my paint jobs is just discouraging frankly. Keep up the good work! You're encouraging me to soldier on.

D&D General Do players even like the risk of death?

Character death is one stake in our games. If I ever had a player say to me that it was important to them that their character not die - I would honor that. I just do not have anyone in that category currently at my table. Yes, I have asked. I am glad that 5e is not the PC sausage grinder that...

D&D General On how many dice we use

Like most old gamers I have a few thousand dice. And like most old gamers I only use three or four sets of really big dice. Not because they are impressive, but so I can read the numbers!

D&D General Do you care about lore?

For D&D I use lore as inspiration - typically to steal for my homebrew. So for D&D I might read it, but I am not concerned with changes. If an RPG revolves around a certain campaign setting I will use lore as an anchor for some parts. For example, in WFRP I use the setting for things like...

    D&D General Would you fequent a gamer's hangout/bar?

Probably not. I have an established group and all my stuff in my game room. If I was recruiting players I might run a campaign to see if I could cherry-pick some folks for my home game.

D&D 5E (2014) Jocks and Nerds: If you like D&D, do you like ... the NFL Draft? (POLL)

I coach high school football and played college football and I don't get the fascination with the draft. I do find Mel Kiper amusing, so I tune in for a little bit. A story I have shared many times over the years here - When we played D&D in my small hometown our group was all "jocks". We all...
