Why the beer hate? (Forked Thread: What are the no-goes...)

That's the thing that's surprised me about this thread. I don't think anyone's advocating getting wasted during games. It's just that people are objecting to games where any alcohol at all is involved. Whatever floats your boat is fine with me. It's just an attitude that is so foreign to me...

Why the beer hate? (Forked Thread: What are the no-goes...)

As I recall from my single days, I met a number of women who became all those things after a few drinks. More attractive, too. Luckily for me, it worked reciprocally for my future wife. :D

Why the beer hate? (Forked Thread: What are the no-goes...)

As someone who's been drinking and gaming for 20 years I can't recall it ever being a problem. Most of my gaming buddies were drinking buddies before become gaming buddies, anyway. I've spent about a quarter of my life defending or prosecuting drunk drivers, and have thus taken a few seminars...

So what is the difference between Basic, B/X and BECMI?

Variable weapon damage was presented as an optional rule in Moldvay and Mentzer. d6 for all weapons was the baseline rule.

Returning to my Roots: Me and Basic Fantasy

Instead of re-posting the entirety of my post on savings throws at K&K, I'll just link to it... KNIGHTS & KNAVES ALEHOUSE :: View topic - Saving Throws in O(A)D&D To sum up, my expanded saving throw categories for B/X: Death Ray or Poison: Physical resistance to trauma (fortitude in 3e terms)...

    Do you consider 2nd edition AD&D "old-school"

You see this, for example, in how "dungeon-centric" (for lack of a better word) the various editions have been. OD&D and Basic D&D were almost entirely dungeon-centric. Advanced D&D and ECMI didn't have as much dungeon material in it, largely due to the fact that the authors thought that the...

    Help me understand OSRIC

DD's already answered this to a large extent. You can get a fee clone of the Basic rules with the Labyrinth Lord game. But, to a great extent, a lot of the houserules people used in AD&D are expressed in what OSRIC leaves out... no psionics, no weapon speeds, no weapon v. armor chart, etc.

    Help me understand OSRIC

It doesn't look like there's any explanation that I can find. It's d20, equal or higher to make the save. (For what it's worth, I don't think there's any explanation in the 1e rules either.) This seems to be omitted. The 1e rule is the multi/dual classed character get the most favorable...

    Help me understand OSRIC

In addition to all the various O(A)D&D products out there... See:link to list of OSRIC products Also see the various 1e compatible products released by Goodman, Pied Piper Press, and very soon by Black Blade. Also any of the C&C products by Troll Lords, Goodman, and James Mishler. Also all...

So what is the difference between Basic, B/X and BECMI?

This might be overstating things a little bit. It certainly has it's own unique quirks, and is neither fish nor fowl as to which edition it is. However, it's perfectly usable with pretty much any D&D product as is closer to the later Basic line of products than OD&D and AD&D were. Like I...

    Do you consider 2nd edition AD&D "old-school"

Yes. Trying to put 35 years and hundreds (thousands?) of products into 2 classes simply isn't meaningful in any productive way. The phases that D&D has gone trough is a lot more nuanced than the "old school v. new school" debate would lead anyone to believe.

    Do you consider 2nd edition AD&D "old-school"

I'll just echo what others have said, mechanically 2e is "old-school." The way it was presented, marketed, and the way the adventures and campaign settings were written weren't "old school." However, I don't know that I'd call it "new school" either. There was a pretty big disjunction...

So what is the difference between Basic, B/X and BECMI?

The Holmes set is really it's own beast. It's halfway between OD&D and AD&D, with a few odd rules that are unique to to it... Basing initiative on Dexterity, the 5-prong alignment chart, etc. The B/X and the BE portion of BECMI, are pretty much identical, a few different spells, a couple...

    Best 1e/2e/original D&D low-level dungeon crawl?

The outside cover says it's for levels 1-3. The inside text says it's for levels 2-3. My favorites... B1 In Search of the Unknown B2 Keep on the Borderlands B4 The Lost City B5 Horror on the Hill B7 Rahasia L1 Secret of Bone Hill T1 Village of Hommelet Rahasia (as already noted), Horror on...

    Associated Press notes D&D lawsuits

It depends on what the judgment is for. Restitution from a criminal case or judgment for child support cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, for example. Copyright law might be different - not my field (neither is bankruptcy for that matter) - but most civil judgments are treated like any other...

    AD&D is not "rules light"

It wasn't written "rules lite," but it was played "rules lite" by pretty much everybody. AD&D, unlike pretty much every other rpg, gets judged on how it was played rather than than how it was written. There's no mystery as to why that is... for over twenty years, it was the most widely played...

    What's Mystara's Hook?

The hook problem with Mystara is that you can't sum it up in a sentence... e.g. "Spelljammer is D&D in space." Instead, proponents sound like a hyperventilating ten-year-old trying to explain to his bemused grandparents the plot of all the cartoons he's been watching over the last 15 hours...

    What's Mystara's Hook?

Calling Mystara "vanilla" is pretty strange. I can't imagine a more GONZO setting this side of Arduin. Two gigantic warring empires, one with the "thousand 36th level wizards," giant air-ships, and mummies, the other with mounted air brigade, gladiators, and massive legions. Weirdo Teutonic...
