OSR OSRIC - how much wealth and magic items should 3rd level characters begin with?

Third level is where monsters that can only be hit by magical/silvered weapons come in. Wights, wererats, and the like. So, you should have a couple +1 weapons sprinkled amongst the warrior-types. A low-powered wand of some sort (trap/magic detection, perhaps) with about a dozen charges might...

What current systems have the most published adventures?

Continuing on 1e/OSRIC... In addition, over the last 5 years or so, there've also been dozens of "generic" adventures like Patrick Wetmore's Anomalous Subsurface Environment.

What current systems have the most published adventures?

Also dozens of 1e adventures, for both OSRIC and those brand, spankin' new 1e handbooks. Hopefully, Amazon is right and we'll get a couple more hardbacks worth of adventures next year.

I played a crappy character...and it was great!

I've long said that I'd prefer char-gen to be more like rolling craps (epitomized by the original Traveler system) than doing my taxes (which is how 3.x always made me feel). Character optimization simply isn't an aspect of the game that interests me. Especially at char-gen. If char-gen is...

    Fudging is not your friend

I roll dice in the open in most situations. I like the trust it creates at the table. I like the players to know I'm not giving them (or the npcs) a safety net. I think a lot more interesting play comes of it. More parleying and negotiations. I don't even use a DM screen. I don't like...

Non-D&D Fantasy Games - the best and why?

My tastes run to the rules-lite and slightly goofy. Two of my favorites that haven't been mentioned yet: Tunnels & Trolls was probably the first non-D&D fantasy rpg to hit the shelves. It's now in its 7th (?) edition, although I believe the classic "5.5" edition is still being printed, too. It...

    1E Unearthed Arcana Reprint?

I'm going to suspend my belief until I see something directly from WotC on this. However, if this is true, I find it quite encouraging, even if Unearthed Arcana probably isn't in the top 10 1e products I'd love to see reprinted, this and the 3.5e reprints show that this isn't a one-time thing...

Are you part of the "Lost Generation" of RPG gamers?

I am not part of that generation, getting my start in 1981 right before 1e was hitting its zenith in terms of popularity. I think there are two factors as to why 2e is "lost" in terms of the attention it gets on the gaming 'Net. First, the sheer number of 2e products made the experience very...

    AD&D 1st edition and 2nd edition differences?

Rangers are very different. Multi-classed m-u's can cast spells in armor in 1e, they can't in 2e. What actions gain you experience points is completely different, which strongly effects how the games are played. Initiative and timing within combat is completely different.

I enjoy doing that quite a bit.

    I feel like ****

A gets along well with B, C, and D, but for whatever reason B and C can't stand D. D is oblivious to B's and C's dislike of him. Is A doing anyone any favors by continuing to host social occasions to which B, C, and D are all invited? Of course not. The nicest thing for A to do is to be...

AD&D, looking backwards, and personal experiences

It's the old "it doesn't matter what the rules actually said, because I know how people actually played it" argument combined with the "what you do isn't actually role playing/what I do is proper role playing" argument. Skillfully done. I was tired of these discussions 8 years ago. You keep...

AD&D, looking backwards, and personal experiences

Have you actually read the orginal D&D rules? I ask because there are almost no combat rules whatsoever. The single largest chunk of rules deals with charisma and its effects on reactions with npcs and the loyaty of allies. Far more rule space is devoted to exploration type rules such as...

AD&D, looking backwards, and personal experiences

Wow! Random diatribe against 1e. Welcome back to EnWorld circa 2003. I didn't realize how much I missed being reminded every day how my favorite edition was the bad-wrong-fun edition. I disagree with pretty much every single thing the OP had to say.

D&D 5E (2014) A Modest Proposal to Unify the Fanbase without D&D Next

Since WotC took over the D&D brand, they have in rough chronological order: 1. Licensed Hackmaster, a mock tribute to AD&D; 2. Issued the Silver Anniversary collector's set, which reprinted the 1978 Basic rules, contained a number of O(A)D&D modules including a never before issued 1e module...

Which D&D edition do you *really* prefer?

When I'm in a foreign country and trying to communicate with the natives, I'll think things out in English first, and then try to say it in the local language. When I'm playing D&D (or one of the myriad of D&D-ish frpgs) of any other stripe, I think things out in B/X D&D terms first, and then...

Been creating a Zelda Tabletop RPG off and on for a year + now.....

The latest edition of Nintendo Power magazine had an article about this, and I immediately thought about this thread. Might be a mandatory purchase for anyone who wants to run a Zelda rpg.

To Kill or Not to Kill (PCs): That is the Question...

It was a very cool campaign, indeed. I'm secretly hoping Jeff gets over his recent Traveler flirtation and back to D&D so Fred can delve again. But don't tell him that. ;) With regard to the resurrections, Fred was an exception. I believe he was the only one who came back twice, and it was...

To Kill or Not to Kill (PCs): That is the Question...

But what difference does it make if my character's been dumped into the Dungeon of Disastrous Doom if he is neither going to suffer disaster nor doom?

To Kill or Not to Kill (PCs): That is the Question...

You're right. That made sense in the context of where I originally wrote it, but not here. I'll snip it.
