Help me build a Strength based monk order

It could be something along the lines of Sumo or Iron Body Kung Fu - study of ki has made you able to shrug off blows (Str and Con bonus); or some sort of damage reduction so the monk could take more damage. I picture attacks along the lines of bear hugs: grapples that do a lot of damage and can...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Multiverse as setting - do you do it?

I've always been inspired by Michael Moorcock's multiverse, and I've always done my campaigns somewhat like that. So the PMP is central and the outer planes in that multiverse attach to that particular PMP. Very much like the 1E version of the planes, there are an infinite number of alternate...

D&D 5E (2014) How did you handle the Aarakocra?

Personally, I think they are kind of ridiculous and I would be less embarrassed to play a winged kobold as a PC than a bird man. I don't have them in my campaign but would consider it if a player really wanted to be one. However, if they just wanted to play a flying character, I'd bring back the...

    Giants in the Earth

Hearkening back to the earliest issues of Dragon Magazine, there was the Giants in the Earth column with AD&D versions of favorite fantasy characters from fiction. I've always liked a tiny smattering of Alternate Prime Material Planes adventures and cameos from my favorite heroes and heroines...

    D&D 5E (2014) Aversion to Creativity?

I so hope you're wrong. For me, the game has always been about fun and the fun is in the creativity and what the players do in game. The Min/Max Power gaming that so many people like to talk about at length in forums like this one is pointless in a game like D&D. The DM always has the power the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tiamat Strikes Back

Sue the PCs for infringing on your religious freedoms. The ACLU will be all over this one.

D&D 5E (2014) Hit Point Recovery Too Generous

This is going off on a tangent, but I also feel like it's too hard to die in 5E. Today I was in 7 player party in an Adventurer's League game, HOTDQ. We were in a fight with a Black Dragon. Since I've been playing the adventure I haven't read it, so I don't know its age or size or stats, but I...

D&D 5E (2014) Hit Point Recovery Too Generous

Everyone, thank you for all of the replies. I haven't had time to read them all yet, but will do so later tonight. Thanks

D&D 5E (2014) Hit Point Recovery Too Generous

Does anyone else think hit point recovery through rests is way too generous in this edition? In AD&D a character would get back one hit point a day after what is now termed a long rest. Now, rest an hour and you get to roll a full hit die, rest a few more hours and you get all of your hit points...

    Applying Alignment to Classes

Before I began with 5E rules, I only played 1st ed rules, so I still tend to think of classes in those terms - lawful monks, neutral or evil thieves, LG paladins etc. However, in the campaign I'm launching I'm barely using alignment; its pretty much optional for PCs - developing character...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crafting / Magical Item sales in 5e

I believe that creation of a magic item should be an undertaking. I'll allow lower level characters to craft single use items, such as potions and scrolls. But any permanent item, I'm requiring a minimum 16th level. Additionally, the items needed are rare and might require a quest to obtain. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Damaging Armor

I've always ruled that critical hits have a chance to damage armor equal to the amount of damage. The result of the damage is generally of reduction of effectiveness of 1 until it is repaired.

D&D 5E (2014) PC Alignment, who needs it?

I'm getting ready to launch a new campaign in the next few weeks, using the 5th Ed rules (as a DM), for the firs time. I'm learning toward getting rid of alignment for the PCs and pretty much for any creature not from the outer planes. The 5E rules pretty much make it a non-factor (compared to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Critical Hits and Fumbles

Good things happen on natural 20's bad things happen on a natural 1. I've always played that way and probably always will. For the natural one, it is usually nothing terrible; the point is not to punish the PCs but add some color and realism to the game. Fights are awkward things in which a lot...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fighters are amazing!

It is entirely up to the DM. But even if one is generally unable to buy magic items in their campaign, there is plenty to spend gold on provided the DM allows the PCs to create lives outside of the dungeon. Some money might be lost to taxes and upkeep, dues to factions or guild memberships...

D&D 5E (2014) I believe the Greyhawk Campaign setting was a missed opportunity for Wizards of the Coast.

Personally, I've always found Greyhawk to be a much more enjoyable setting than the Forgotten Realms. Strictly a matter of taste. However, I've played much more in Greyhawk than FR. My main exposure to FR was some of the books from that setting, which to me seemed somewhat juvenile and rather...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fighters are amazing!

Not sure what you mean. I'm coming to 5E from 1E, and the 1E fighter was always a badass and they didn't need a lot of tricks to do it. They had the best attack tables, best hit points, exceptional strength, best armor, and most proficiencies. It was all they needed to hang with any other class...

    D&D 5E (2014) [5e +] So what are you currently doing with 5e

Playing HOTDQ while putting the finishing touches on an campaign setting featuring an elaborate urban setting with a very diverse population - humans, humanoids, demi-humans, even an undead neighborhood where it is always night.

D&D 5E (2014) Elven trance and long rests

Despite the wording that a long rest is 8 hours, any other PC race who sleeps 8 hours has a long rest, so if 4 hours of elven trance is equal to 8 hours of sleep for anyone else, logic would dictate that this would be a long rest for an elf.

D&D 5E (2014) Elven trance and long rests

We've been discussing this quite a bit in another thread that got off track. I mentioned my elf character only needing 4 hours for a long rest due to the trance feature. To me, it seemed like that was what the trance feature was there for, but it turned out that there were a lot of...
