Thanks for the nightmare image of an ant farm Shire!

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

True, I was going by this text from the PHB, "Elves have the ability to see into the infro-red spectrum, so they are able to see up to 60' in darkness, noting varying degrees of heat radiation." Of course the DMG takes the perfectly clear "... see up to 60ft in darkness... " and complicates it...

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

Several demi-human races in the 1978 AD&D Player's Handbook had infravision, ie, the ability to see up to 60ft in darkness. OK, so 47 years. Did elves not see in the dark in OD&D? Now I'm curious if that changed from the very 1st version.

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

"Common feature that has been in the game for 50 years ruins game that's endured for 50 years" is always going to be a hard argument to make.

D&D 5E (2024) How Important Is The Lore

I voted ‘take it or leave it’ because it’s valuable to some folks and, admittedly, it might be interesting. But my gut reaction these days is to despise any use of the word ‘lore’ that is not referring to Data’s evil twin brother.

Mainstream News Discovers D&D's Species Terminology Change

This whole fake debate seems really weird to someone who thought D&D races were species and that it would be more interesting to treat monsters as people circa 1987.

D&D General The New York Times on D&D

The article is a good example of the NYT's semi-recent approach to 'balanced' journalism. It rises to the level of egregious when the topic is more serious. It's also why we finally cancelled our subscription after decades of being loyal readers.

Spoilers Lower Decks Season 05x10 "The New Next Generation"

I really enjoyed the finale, but the previous episode delivered the best and clearest statement of Star Trek’s way of doing science fiction in a few lines of dialogue.

    You have a Kaiju!

As a young boy I would have said Jet Jaguar but seeing as I’m almost 56 something more fundamentally busted like Jet Alone is probably more appropriate. Yes, I know they’re both robots. But kaiju-adjacent robots.

Dragon Age 4 - now The Veilguard

Thanks for reminding me I inadvertently murdered an entire elven village while trying to date Merrill in DA2. I managed to suppress that memory. The things you do for love. Like doing things you later regret forever. Which leads us to Veilguard. I just finished a 70 hour play-through where it...

Worlds of Design: Consistent Fantasy Ecologies

I think this misunderstands what makes people suspend their disbelief in a fictional world. I suspect the size of the audience for whom a realistic ecology matters is vanishingly small.
