This calls up the same basic question for the author: "If I cannot write confidently on this, should my plot/narrative hinge on the details of its operation?"

The Fantastic Four: First Steps - Official Teaser Trailer (2025)

I cannot speak to hyperbole I did not hear. The ads made it look cool. It was cooler than that. Not yet. End of August seems to be what online sources are guessing.

Yes. I'm sorry, it isn't great, but yes. Yep. People on the internet are frequently wrong, or at least far less right than they think, and willing to be dismissive and accusative if it means they get to feel like the point they made is defended. This is bog standard human behavior much of...

Given the cost of healthcare, sir, and your admission that folks are going to lose jobs, you should speak much less authoritatively on that point.

Yep. Indeed, FTL is hardly the only subject where that applies. The question one needs to ask oneself is there, "If I cannot write confidently about this... am I sure I should address it?" Is the narrative really better for having the technical discussion in it? It is a pretty basic risk vs...

Oh, I forgot to note this: This all comes down less to the issue of, "Isn't it weird when characters show the setting conceits don't work by real-world science" and more of, "the authors of those characters are talking about stuff they don't really understand, and stumble." Basically, this is...

Which is why we really should note the "Special" in special relativity. Special relativity is, as the name implies, a special, limited case, and does not give the whole story. The limitation is that special relativity does not hold in literally all frames of reference, but holds in all...

There will always be exceptions, of course. It is a broad generalization.. But, I believe I didn't just imply it - I think I said it pretty directly in another post. I think it stands up about as well as most other broad generalizations out there. 1) What? Are you trying to imply that...

So... some people on the internet were wrong. You present this as somehow remarkable, instead of being about as common as water being wet.

Not literally. It's a cultural reference. Enough so that there's ascii art for it. The point is that "bear it until you just have to leave" is... short sighted and immature. Adults talk things through before they become unbearable or crises, if at all possible.

And, in my own observation, there's a persistent idea that folks need to "deserve" help to get it, and goodness help us if anyone who doesn't "deserve" it gets a red cent. That's why I put up that bit about the Foglios. They don't need justification to ask, but I could perhaps forestall...

The Foglios once donated a handsome prize to a charity auction my wife was running at a local sci-fi convention. They helped us raise thousands of dollars for breast cancer research, probably the most successful charity event in the history of that convention. So, yeah, they get to ask for help.

What's the old saying? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone? And, what's the other, newer, saying? Don't make it personal? This line of discussion starts to read like, "I can dodge/dismiss your points, because you are so strident," which isn't appropriate.

So, as written, this can seem like, "Grin and bear it until it is too much, and then throw a hissy-fit, flip the table and walk out." Before, "you just leave," there really ought to be some, "attempt to talk through the issues like mature adults," that isn't mentioned here. Unless you're...
