D&D General Interview with D&D VP Jess Lanzillo on Comicbook.com

I'm not worried about micro-transactions. I'm more worried about WotC prioritizing digital tools over pen and paper play because: 1. Even if you don't use any digital tools, if the rules are written with digital tools in mind you'll end up them prioritizing rules that are easier for their...

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

In my own personal bubble (which is not representative of the overall hobby but it's what I know) after a couple year hiatus from the hobby during the dying days of TSR and the 3.0 era things went like this: 1. 3.5e was the default, most every campaign was that or at least d20. 2. After people...

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

I'm more sure of the second point (see below) this one is more subjective on my end but my general impressions: -The more grognardy/hardcore discussion places seem more cranky about 5.5e than the more casual-filled discussions I've seen. -WotC marketing for 5.5e seems VERY player-focused. I mean...

D&D 5E (2024) I love the new changes to Paladin

They were powerful but they weren't so bad if you followed the official ruling that the DM chose what specific critters were summoned. The new ones allow for some crazy naughty word with scorching ray etc.

Yup, could sort through all of these issues as a DM. But why pay money to give myself more issues to sort through? I can give myself issues to sort through for free.

D&D 5E (2024) I love the new changes to Paladin

I wouldn't be so sure of that eyes the new summoning spells The main thing narrows the gap is that SS/GWM are no longer so necessary for a martial that doesn't suck and the weaker classes (except poor rogues) tended to get siazable combat buffs but we'll see how well casuals get the hang of...

    Changes to Second Wind.

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

They need a high enough conversion that people who don't particularly like 5.5e end up playing it because so many other people end up playing it. 4e very conspicuously failed to hit that point but every other edition of D&D has so I wouldn't bet against 5.5e despite its lukewarm reception...

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

Yup this is the single biggest issue with 5e: it's a pain in the ass to run a traditional dungeon crawl with 5e and 5.5e does sweet naughty word-all to fix this. Unless you have a long and focused session (and mine have plenty of pizza munching and side chatter and I wouldn't have it any other way...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

What Gygax seems to have based Common on is Sabir/Mediterranean Lingua Franca which was a sailor's language based on romance languages with simplified grammar and a bunch of other languages mixed in. Nobody spoke it as their native or main language but it was easy enough to learn that a lot of...

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

Yeah, it's hard to parse how much of the current 5e playerbase isn't going to jump on board 5.5e since on EnWorld people who aren't currently playing 5e in the first place are over-represented compared to the overall hobby.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

Yeah as a general thing for rider effects I'd like to see them trigger if you beat the DC by X instead of requiring a saving throw, just fewer numbers to juggle and less dice to roll. Probably my favorite things from PF 2e, just like healing surges were my favorite things from D&D 4e, and...

D&D 5E (2024) Are single class martials still going to be viable in 2024?

That...would take a lot of work. 3.5e is built on pretty different logic. Not saying it couldn't be done but that would be a LOT of time invested.

D&D 5E (2024) Are single class martials still going to be viable in 2024?

Why would fighters want to attack with charisma?

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

It's more the logistics of short rests in dungeons with gritty realism in place.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

Yeah, healing surges were 4e's best mechanical idea and hit dice are a pale shadow of them thar don't accomplish the best thing that healing surges did (limit total healing) just didn't like the implementation in how generous they were. Made attrition take too long.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

Yeah, I've done variants of that and it works great for overland campaigns but it takes traditional dungeon crawls off the table.

D&D General Interview with D&D VP Jess Lanzillo on Comicbook.com

I also just fon't think it will work. WotC just doesn't have enough of a hold on the D&D community to make people put up with that kind of behavior. Just look at the backlash to the OGL fuckery last year.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

WRT bards, the LaserLlama half caster bard seems fine, being full casters fills up so much of the 5.*ed bard's power budget that they just end up as wizards with a lute most of the time.
