    Let’s Make a Hexcrawl Setting

I had to teach on Christmas Eve so I showed my corporate classes movies and for the kids 11-12 year-olds I ran D&D (more or less Holmes Basic through more or less In Search of the Unknown). They took right to dungeon crawling tactics amazingly well. I put on their equipment lists on their pregen...

The Drinker's Stein Additional information about Hex 05.06 Inspired very indirectly from Ulan Dhor by Jack Vance (the magic item getting divided causing a civil war is Vance all of the details are me). The desperate cannibalistic derro that now huddle in the Trench of the Battle Hills (05.06)...

    Let’s Make a Hexcrawl Setting

It's interesting that one of the most undeveloped corners of the Shrouded Lands is the strip of land with the World's Edge to the east, the Kingswoods to the north, the Keening Sea to the south and Shuttered to the west. We don't have much but the whole area gives me a damp, gloomy Lovecraftian...

    Let’s Make a Hexcrawl Setting

New PDF compilation here. More art, 21 new entries and tweaked organization. The main difference is that every hex with subhexes has a listing of what subhexes it contains so that it's easier to navigate stuff (especially the monster entry for 29.14)...

Do we live in the d20 Dark Ages?

Neonchameleon: agreed, people who enjoy learning the ins and outs of rule systems will probably be driven insane by stuff like: http://strolen.com/netbooks/proficiencies.txt (compilation of 2ed proficiency rules from various sources, a good demonstration of everything wrong with 2ed, just try...

Do we live in the d20 Dark Ages?

Yup, WotC's been far nicer about managing their IP than TSR ever was. Still incredibly stupid to yank the PDF sales of out of print stuff. I can understand (if not agree with) the idea that not selling PDFs of your current stuff helps drive DDI and book sales but not selling PDFs of the out of...

Skibart Holding Hex 20.03 Right at the edge of orcish territory once lay the famous fields of the Skibart halflings, were the pipeweed that most every gnomish illusionist smokes was grown. The Skibarts paid their tribute to the orcs of Hoth Achaar (26.01) and lived in relative peace. But with...

Do we live in the d20 Dark Ages?

The "you can ignore the rules" bit actually does matter. NWPs are definitely optional rules and I think weapon profs are as well (not sure, don't have my 2ed book on hand and haven't read them in a loooooooong time). If you say "we're not using proficiencies" everything works fine (probably...

Do we live in the d20 Dark Ages?

Neonchameleon: 2ed is hardly my edition of choice but I think you're overstating how complicated it is. My brother ran a 2ed campaign when he was still having trouble with his multiplication tables and it went fine because: -You can often just ignore the more complicated bits (such NWPs and...

The Ring of Invisibility Additional information about Hex 13.08 One of the treasures that can be found in Severard's web-shrouded tower is the ring of invisibility once worn by Gilad the Unavoidable. It is a bronze ring studded with dull gems and inscribed with strange runes that grants the...

    Mapping Software???

I like hexographer for general areas maps (they have town mapping programs and dungeon matting ones as well) especially since it's free. What sets it apart from other ones that I've tried is that the interface is very simple and pretty damn idiot-proof.

Did any information ever come out about the price? If the PDF isn't stupidly expensive I'm buying this.

From Adventure Game to Story Game?

Yaguara: ah I misread you then and our positions are closer together than I thought. Let me poke at things a bit. Let say you're playing a game and in the first combat encounter your character gets hit by a lucky critical and dies, do you: A. Have the DM try to avoid that sort of thing from...

Traveler. The 70's "age of sail in spaaaaaaaaace" stuff is easier to pull inspiration from just like "Swords and Sorcery" is easier to pull inspiration from since the basic ideas are pretty unified more than say "modern fantasy" (how to put Harry Potter and Game of Thrones together?).

    Let’s Make a Hexcrawl Setting

Was just looking at the sci-fi mapsets for hexographer and I've been thinking of maybe doing a sci-fi spinoff of this thread for an old school sci-fi Traveler-type setting. This wouldn't happen for a while (few months?) but I've had so much fun with this thread that I thought it might be fun to...

Depends what kind of sci-fi, but for the "age of sail in space + lots of weird :):):):)" stuff that I'd like to game with the most I'd go with Poul Anderson (specifically the Van Rinj ones) and George R. R. Martin's old sci-fi stories (which you should really really read if you haven't, it's...

The Wives of Viceroy Orhan Additional information about Hex 19.31 Note: I’ve started rereading the Dying Earth by Jack Vance and it’s easy to see why they influenced Gygax so much, I can barely read a page without scribbling something down that gives me ideas for this setting. This one is very...

From Adventure Game to Story Game?

Yaguara: a lot of story games put a lot of those decisions in the players hands. There are plenty games out there that let a player define how they win or lose an encounter if they lose it and plenty more that allow rerolling if they lose it. But for me the main difference is that if you have a...

Sanglorian: added a bunch of those silhouette images. A lot of them are really useful since they fill in holes that I haven't been able to find 19th century paintings of. Many thanks.
