Yeah I really like the way that Wizards handle complexity in general. The chassis is dead simple and all of the complexity gets offloaded onto bite-sized bits that a new player doesn't need to know all of in order to be an effective wizard.

I like the idea of spending hit dice in combat, just a glimmer of the much better 4e healing surges.

If they want a character sheet with all the right tooltips etc. then they'll have to manually "homebrew" some stuff spell by spell to get the 5.0 stuff they want to display correctly. Other 5.0 stuff can be chosen as a "legacy" option.
