D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Absolutely not - A5e provides far more of the exploration tier than default 5e. But when folks talk about balancing the Ranger, I assume that they're talking about default 5e's ranger, which is lackluster. Those who are running ToA in Adventure League wouldn't be able to use the A5e tools, which...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

However, combat is the only part of the game that's sufficiently fleshed out, therefore it's the only thing that's balanced for with any class. Exploration would give room to balance out the ranger (and potentially others), but that tier is nearly nonexistent in default 5e.

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

For me, it's not that I actually want to kill their characters at all - I have a moral quandry every time that gets even remotely close. However...I think, the game needs that tension, for both them and me, and if the threat of death is only pretend, then the same emotional depth and reality of...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Cloak of Elvenkind in 2e: A cloak of elvenkind is of a plain neutral gray which is indistinguishable from any sort of ordinary cloak of the same color. However, when it is worn, with the hood drawn up around he head, it enables the wearer to be nearly invisible, for the cloak has chameleon-like...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

I’ve been considering starting up a 5e game (or going with Swords & Wizardry) and was thinking I’d roll with Laserllama classes for all of the core classes, but if that’s the wrong direction, I’d love to know as well.

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Out of curiosity, why do you give ToV the edge? I haven’t gotten the Player’s Guide (only the GMG and the Monster Vault) as I heard it was mostly more of the same.

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Absolutely. Simplifying can be good, but it went too far. Simplify things for the player side, but give the DMs an ocean of material to use to challenge the players/characters. Don’t rely on design by committee because it cheapens the product and makes the system weaker. I see this in the...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Ah, yeah. If there was focus on more stuff than just combat, then the ranger would get to have his niche in a really cool way, IMO. Stuff outside of only combat is interesting to me. I was just thinking yesterday that the extreme focus on balance and nailing down every mechanic and spell removes...

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

I think it’s important that each character has their niche. I’m not sure if “overshadowed by their companions” means that they don’t want to be overshadowed in any situation (i.e. the rogue being a better lock picker than the fighter). If we’re comparing a Wizard’s ability to use magic to a...

D&D General Help Me with My Pathological Aversion to Third Party D&D Products

I’m stunned no one has mentioned Matt Colville and MCDM’s Flee, Mortals! yet.

D&D 5E (2024) Do players really want balance?

Agreed 100%. Any perceived loss of power or ramp up in difficulty is taken as a slight against their character. Maybe since they don’t see the DM side of the screen, they think that the game is already balanced fairly? But then again, that calls back to the game balance of them winning fights...

New Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master's Guide Art and Details Revealed

I like some of the art, but some of the art of characters to me seems too pristine and posed. I want drama and action, not a JC Penney photo of adventurers.

    D&D 5E (2014) DM-Facing content to port into 5e from 3e/3.5+

I’ve thought about level drain too, and I was thinking instead of actually draining XP, it just takes the same amount of XP more for the person to level.

    D&D 5E (2014) DM-Facing content to port into 5e from 3e/3.5+

For example, I was just looking through the weather table between 3.5, a5e, and 5e, and the one in 3.5 is just so much more dense with information and different options that I find to be more inspiring. And the encounter lists! So great.

    D&D 5E (2014) DM-Facing content to port into 5e from 3e/3.5+

I find that much of the DM-facing content is lacking in 5e, and I think most would agree with me compared to prior editions. What content, tables, mechanics, etc., do you or would you find worth porting in from prior editions? I have a lot of the 3e/3.5 books, but never actually ended up playing...
