I have to ask why people still seem to be having troubles with these rules. I think they are excellent guidelines for running hiding during a game.

I am liking it so far. It was easily usable on my iPad. One thing I noticed was that in the monster entries the passive perception was listed as a +# like it was a bonus instead of a DC. But I think a really positive start.

I am looking forward to the compendium. I will use the CB but that isn't a big deal for me. Really hope we can get electronic versions of adventures at some point.

Great official D&D digital rules, and with a bonifide gaming company. That's awesome. Really looking forward to seeing an online compendium. That was my favorite part of DDI. Will there be digital versions of the adventures? Either at launch or down the road?

I am wondering why you think Amazon is a bad place to pre-order. I do it all the time. Sure some LGS get it sooner but I rarely how to my LGS so Amazon is very convenient.

Most monsters will only get an extra +1 out of this. The lowest monsters probably won't benefit and there may be some high level monsters that get maybe a +2, so it's not huge. In my 4e conversions to 5e I use monster level to get prof bonus and that is analogous to HD in 5e.

Sounds like the issue is a disconnect between the game the players want to play and the game the DM wants to run (and you seem to want the same thing as the DM). Personally I loath taking notes. I hated it in collage (and rarely did it) and still do. So if I miss a plot point sometimes then oh...

In 1 and 2 I would allow the attacker to be unseen with a successful stealth check (probably with advantage on 2) and would allow the same thing with a deception check on 3.

Only one of the PCs had the alert feat. The other two could be surprised. The barbarian still would have known there was a danger on his turn and took the dodge action or readied an action, or whatever on his turn.

If no one was surprised then I assume the creatures in the darkness failed their stealth checks. So the PCs would have known where the monsters were even if they couldn't see them.

They never know for sure until a monster reacts but if they roll really low then it is narrated by them doing something that would be easy for some to notice them.

If you are using miniatures then you should be allowed the same number of creatures per mini. For example if I am fighting dwarves against ogres then my Ogre mini will be larger and take up more space than a dwarf mini. I agree the math is weird right now but I like the direction this is headed.

I can't really say as I don't recall what was in the 3.5 rules.
