D&D 5E (2014) DM Help! My rogue always spams Hide as a bonus action, and i cant target him!

So npc is in complete darkness and cannot hide? How is this different than an npc that turns invisible in front of the pcs? He can hide but the darkness guy can't?

D&D 5E (2014) DM Help! My rogue always spams Hide as a bonus action, and i cant target him!

Thats the point. If the npc doesn't take the hide action then the other senses allow the PCs to know which 5x5 space he is in. He needs to hide action to hide which square he is in.

D&D 5E (2014) DM Help! My rogue always spams Hide as a bonus action, and i cant target him!

So you would allow the NPC to attempt the hide action? Let's assume no secret door. Can he take the action the round he goes into the darkness or does he have to wait around?

Okay what about the next round if the PCs wanted to shoot an arrow at the npc. Do they know where he is? Or if he is still there?

Flamestrike, please tell us how would you handle if an NPC went into an area of darkness (say 20' by 20') while your PCs watched him go into the darkness. What would you tell the PCs about his location? What if the NPC went through a secret door in the darkness? How would you handle this?

D&D 5E (2014) DM Help! My rogue always spams Hide as a bonus action, and i cant target him!

Breaking line of sight is exactly what is needed for hiding. Let's say there is an area of darkness with 4 connected spaces. You see me miove into one of these spaces. Since I cannot be seen I successful take the hide action. Now at this point you do not know which space I am in. I could still...

D&D 5E (2014) DM Help! My rogue always spams Hide as a bonus action, and i cant target him!

Unseen means that people know which space you occupy but have disadvantage when attacking you and you have advantage when attacking them. Hidden means that that you cannot be perceived by those you are hidden from. They can guess where you are and if they guess right you still have the...

D&D 5E (2014) Parts of the game that get a lot of hate but you love

Reading a lot of posts it seems that many people think that the 5e stealth rules are a mess. When I first read them I though these are pretty simple and make sense. Obviously there are some different interpretation of these rules and I have been involved in some debates about what the rules say...

D&D 5E (2014) DM Help! My rogue always spams Hide as a bonus action, and i cant target him!

You missed the point. A and B don't want to confront C. If he is not hidden behind the tree then they know he is still there and can just wait for him to move again. If he is hidden then they don't know if he is there or teleported away or whatever. They have to decide if they need to wait him...

D&D 5E (2014) DM Help! My rogue always spams Hide as a bonus action, and i cant target him!

Hiding has nothing to do with object permanency. Let's look at an example. two thigs (A and B) are following C. They don't want to engage him so they are keeping their distance. C moves behind a tree and is now out of their sight. A few things can happen. 1) C just stands there. 2) C...

Just give monsters super stealth which gives them advantage on the first attack made when they start the round in hiding. PCs don't have to have all the toys the monsters do. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Monk Evasion is limited to which certain area effects?

I am sure that is part of it. But with a little practice you will get the hang of it. 4e clearly separated the flavor text from the rules. 5e puts them together.

i guess we will agree to disagree. Maybe leaning out and attacking is RAI. I have no idea. I only know what is written and the rules say nothing about revealing and attacking being simultaneous.

D&D 5E (2014) DM Help! My rogue always spams Hide as a bonus action, and i cant target him!

Lets go back to my example. You walk towards a pillar. I lean out from behind the pillar and point a bow at you. I have revealed myself whether I attack or not. I am not hidden any longer. No rule allows you to have a simultaneous reveal and attack. Now if I attack (same round) I am no longer...

D&D 5E (2014) Seriously, why no setting support?

I actually appreciate pdfs more as I get older and my eyesight deteriorates and I refuse to wear reading glasses. With pdfs I can make the text as big as I want. :) Of course there are other benefits too.

No surprse means you are not detected before the round starts.

The biggest support disappointment are no pdfs.

D&D 5E (2014) Shadow Step in dark dungeon - general purpose teleport or abuse of feature?

I am not seeing the issue. The power allows you to teleport into an area of darkness.

Nothing in the rules allow you to start an attack behind cover then finish it after a pop out.
