This is what I do fairly regularly.

Absolutely. I love the Cave Fisher but if I want a tougher version and make it CR 4ish, I take a troll, remove the regen, add the filament attack, adjust some DC, give it a climb speed and done.

I also use it for speed when unprepared for something. I use Ogres for almost anything that is big and strong. Need a Orc leader, I use the Ogre stats. Need some wild monster, fabled lion of Fretville? USe the ogre stat. Quick and easy if unprepared.

I do it all the time....regardless of the edition or how many books are out. Last couple sessions I have used: Adult Black Dragon- Lizard Man King Kou-Toa's Whips and Regulars, Human Bandits- Orc raiding party Giant Octopus- Mythical Land o'puss One of the Dinosaurs- Cave Troll

I really like the old FR suppplements. FR2- Moonshae was probably my favortie in 1E The Giant and Dragon black books from 2E are up there as well.
