D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Right none of those tricks would work against an 8 INT Orc, a 1st level thief or a commoner. Sorry buddy, your creativity doesn't work here! And it does address the concern. KD's doesn't want to suck, it seems he defines suck as combat worthyness. Pulling off one of those spells and saving...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Because they couldn't see well in the cloud? The enemies " chose" to leave the fog cloud because it was hampering their sight.

They ended up moving out of the cloud and having to "dash" to get where they wanted to be.

    D&D 5E (2014) Iconic low level monsters

I run a game for a bunch of 13/14 year old kids who are playing for the first time. I wanted to expose them to "iconic" monsters. So far I have used skeletons and orcs. I plan on using ghould soon. What are the other "must see" low level monsters? The party is 3rd level.

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

How do you know when it has less than 20 hit points? Do you make a medicine check or something?

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Shield is one of the best spells around at 1st level. It basically ignores a hit, in many cases it's better than a CLW spell. I wouldn't mind seeing it last 1 round/spell level though. As a 4th level spell slot it lasting 4 rounds would be neat.

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Sleep is only good (and it's really good) against things with low hp. Our 1st level wizard was dominating at 1st level when we fought kobolds and other things with less than 12 hit points. Sleep stinks (even 2nd level sleep) against CR 2's and higher. Tasha's is a much better choice at that...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

I used fog cloud last night. It basically caused a group of guys to give up their actions to get out of it. It was pretty effective. I think someone mentioned this below but wizard spells are now situationally effective. Sometimes sleep is a good option, sometimes magic missile is a good...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

I have seen two players play wizards over the last few months. One is 3rd level and the other is 6th. Both players have kinda complained about the "fun" factor in the wizard. Their complaints consists of: * With limited resources it is a huge let down when your big spell sizzles. You wait...

    Magic Item/Artifact for BBEG

The amulet is part of the strory, the PC's will never get to use it.

    Magic Item/Artifact for BBEG

First of all, I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this. I don't know where to put this. Now, I am looking for some design feedback for an item that will give a low level "bad guy" some legendary and lair powers. Any input is welcome. Amulet of Whispers: The amulet of whispers is...

D&D 5E (2014) DMing for Only 1 Player [Any Tips?]

I've done this. It's fun. Couple things: 1. Make sure you like the person, spending 4 hours with someone just talking can be rough! 2. Combat gets tricky. Four kobolds can flat out kill a 3rd level character in 2 rounds. If you use the encounter chart you'll probably need to half (or...

    Magus/Spellsword 5e idea. I'd like advice.

Yeah, I like the idea of channeling spell slots into "powers". For example, use a spell slot to: do 1d6 extra damage grant 1d4+4 temp hitpoints gain advantage on an attack reroll a saving throw overcome resistances

    Magus/Spellsword 5e idea. I'd like advice.

How about something like 3 (or 4) schools, 1/2 caster level, d8 dice, wizard ASI model, and some arcane "trick"using the 3,7, 11, etc system. I would think something like an Arcane Divine Strike would be cool. Trading in spells for extra damage or advantage or something would be cool.

What's wrong with the Eldritch Knight? Seems like you designed the same class. At first glance this has better powers and faster spelll progression than the EK without really giving anything up other than Armor and Weapon Profiencies.

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlock/Paladin/Sorcerer Question

It says "extend one paladin spell slot to deal....". The pact magic piece in the multiclassing sections seems to me that the intent was to make the spell slots interchangeable. Certainly could be interpretted either way.

    D&D 5E (2014) Classic or just plain brilliant adventures/modules

I have really enjoyed: G1- (G2 and G3 less) U1- Sinister Secrets of Salt Marsh D1 and D2- X1(?)- Isle of Dread and my all time favorite is B1(?)- Keep on the Borderlands. The GDQ series was cool because of the story. Salt Marsh was fun as well and a lot less hack and slashy. Isle of Dread...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlock/Paladin/Sorcerer Question

The Warlock to Paladin was story based. We are playing Hoard of the Dragon Queen and through out the adventure he has developed a desire to stop the Cult of the Dragon at all costs. Church of Bahamut here I come. Taking the levels in Sorcerer are just kinda cool. First, I wanted to...
