    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore 4/1/2013

On Obryn's subject of "losing two level" in the Adventurer Tier... I don't see it as such. As Kamikaze said, "What are you losing?" I see two possibilities. One, character abilities. Two, time spent playing. One isn't an issue, since all of those same abilities will simply be compressed...

D&D 5E (2014) First Level Hit Points Need to Increase

Just chiming in. The more I think about it, the more I like the Constitution Score + HD at 1st-level, and just HD (not + Con mod) each level gain. I also like the idea of the Con modifier having more of role in the game besides saves and checks. My thought was you could add the mod to every...

    D&D 5E (2014) Which feats shouldn't be feats

Just wanted to say that I dislike the presentation, number, and composition of feats in the playtest, as well. But with that said, I think it's important to keep in mind that this is a playtest that experiments with things that we may not see completely clearly. I have a suspicion that the...

    D&D 5E (2014) New D&D Next Packet Is Available

I'm okay, but not thrilled, with Lawful paladins and the alignment restrictions of the sub-classes. Easily hand-waveable. Why can't Deadly Strike and Multiattack be the same feature?

    D&D 5E (2014) New D&D Next Packet Is Available

I'm looking forward to reading through this playtest packet, and I'm all for 5e... But please please please... No "bonus feats" as class features! Argh!

    D&D 5E (2014) The Paladin naming convention

Another vote for the use of "Champion." "Knight" should remain a Background. "Cavalier" should be a Specialty and should focus on mounted combat. I'm fine with "Champion" or "Paladin" being the container, though I'm leaning toward "Champion." So, the Champion classPaladin sub-class (LG...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D podcast!

Wow. Just coming into the discussion, I've read the entire thread, and... wow. Firstly, I think there should be a Warlord class. I can take or leave the healing aspect. A Warlord, both story-wise and mechanic-wise, is as much a "tactical fighter" as the Paladin is a "religious/divine...

Pathfinder 1E Anticaster campaign world but with viable PC casters

I would recommend the d20 campaign setting from FFG, Midnight to anyone. It has many many elements to it that make the campaign world unique, and one of them is the hunting down of arcane casters. I believe they're even available for PDF download at the FFG website, too.

    D&D 5E (2014) Cosmetic Changes You'd Like to See

Cosmetic changes, another vote for "time style," both exterior and interior. Cracked leather, gilded and beclasped... I loved the 3e books, and the new ones. Old parchment, sketches, and cool fonts for the pages, also evocative. 4e was definitely too clinical, too "whiteboard," as someone...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spell Preparation - A Better Vancian or a Bridge Too Far?

Prefacing this post with the fact I like this wizard. First, I think it harkens enough back to Vancian spellcasting with this "cleric-style" mechanic. I wouldn't entirely consider it "on-the-fly" because of the sure restriction of the number of spells to memorize. If you're covering all...

    Thank you morrus!

I just want to donate. I don't really want or need incentives, or more functionality, or perks, or my name up somewhere. Just point me to a Donate button! Any idea who the hackers were, or what happened?

    Donation rather than Subscription?

I would like to ditto this. I'm already a subscriber, but I'm more than willing to give a straight donation, too!

D&D 5E (2014) What Wizards can do to make D&D Next successful.

I totally agree. I think it would also be worth it for WotC to take it a step or three further. Adventure modules and adventure paths would be very welcome, of course. But what about more sandbox-style adventures, or even more sandboxes themselves? The Gloomwrought book, and Gardmoure Abbey...

D&D 5E (2014) New take on why expertise dice is a bad mecanic

Yes, as long as you can choose the mechanic for spellcasting. So, a 3E "sorcerer" would actually be a 5E Wizard with the "spontaneous casting" mechanic choice. Completely agree. Simplicity versus unique, casual versus depth, are difficult knife-edges. Of course, everyone's ideas of simple...

D&D 5E (2014) New take on why expertise dice is a bad mecanic

I don't have a problem with the expertise dice mechanic being used across multiple martial classes, as long as two things are done to individualize those classes: Different and unique maneuver lists Different methods to access expertise dice The first seems obvious, but I would like to point...

Pathfinder 1E Curious... what does Wizards think of Pathfinder?

There have been some public acknowledgements through WotC. I remember one from Shelly Mazzanoble in her article this year. I feel like there was another mention of Paizo in an official Wizards article, as well. Definitely no bad blood, they like each other on a personal level, and they play...

    D&D 5E (2014) Expertise Dice = Vancian Magic = ADEU

I'm a fan of symmetry (not needless symmetry, or boring symmetry - granted it's a fine line to cross). I would kind of like to see each class look something like this: Class: Hit Die Armor, weapon, implement proficiencies Skills? Unique Class Feature (combat) Unique Class Feature...

D&D 5E (2014) Do Away with Weapon Attack, Magic Attack, Save Bonuses

I, too, agree with not having those silly Weapon/Magic Attack bonuses. It seems to make things needlessly complicated, a barrier to casual and new players, and a little too "gamist." Although upping the ability score bonuses might result in similar math, I don't think that's the answer...

    Midnight returns?

Count me as a Midnight fan, too. I have each of the releases as well, and of course ran into the same issue with running adventures. I would be happy seeing some published adventures. I'm less a fan of a railroading Adventure Path, but I really like the idea of some interconnected adventures...

Radical Houserule: No in-combat healing for anyone

I actually had begun considering something similar last week, while ruminating on the three pillars design of Next. If we assume that each class should have access to abilities that work across the three pillars (Combat, Exploration, Social), we should be able to slot each class ability into...
