Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Exactly. Gaming is social and it's definitely not the game's fault if there is a dysfunctional group. Any game can fall victim to that!

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

If you see something in a gamestye that is so extreme the game would fall apart through sheer boredom or chaos, you are probably misunderstanding the rules and expectations.

QuestWorlds is coming—who else is hyped?

@Autumnal Sunset is a beautiful cat. Love the name!

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

I don't think this is accurate. Players would get pretty bored. Even the most conscripted game isn't that predictable and formulaic.

    Daggerheart Release Date Revealed

That too. Critical Role is savy. I imagine that they're testing the waters with Daggerheart on their show and won't just completely dump D&D before getting a feel for fan preference.

Kobold Press Announces 'Cozy' RPG Riverbank

Wind in the Willows is a mix of adventure, cozy rural life by the river, and a touch of mysticism. I think it's an excellent inspiration for a game, especially with some regency flavour thrown in. Personally I can't wait to be just messin' about with boats.

    Daggerheart Release Date Revealed

I think it's also a backlash to Darrington Press/Critical Role. Lots of complaining there too. I think Daggerheart looks interesting. Lots of people have tried it and found it to be fun. And I love frog characters, ever since I played a grippli many years ago. 🐸

Kobold Press Announces 'Cozy' RPG Riverbank

Yep. Lots of people get tired of or are not drawn to killing monsters or fighting horrors.

Kobold Press Announces 'Cozy' RPG Riverbank

Riverbank is going to have its own system, not related at all to 5e. Even if it's just used for a few sessions as a palette cleanser, I agree, that these kind of games are catching on. And for some, this genre will be more engaging than killing monsters.

Kobold Press Announces 'Cozy' RPG Riverbank

Yes, Shires Out looks like so much fun. And there's the Hobbiton video game.

Kobold Press Announces 'Cozy' RPG Riverbank

I'll be backing this one. Won't be able to resist as this kind of setting is my comfort food. I have been really trying to cut back on rpg purchases lately. Thanks, Kobolds. 😂

Spoilers Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

We're rewatching DS9 right now. The strength of the show to me is definitely the characters. Some of the weaker episodes hold up better because of the strong characters. Just recently saw the tribble episode which is so delightful. I'm surprised how well Jake and Nog are handled. They acted...

D&D General It's Game Night! What's On the Table?

I'm running Vaesen this afternoon for my husband. This weekend our group will be either playing Ryuutama or Fate, depending who GMs. We've been swapping GM duties of late. 😊

What are your preferred modes of play?

I checked a lot of boxes because I enjoy a wide variety of gaming, from OSR to Story Now. Of course this means we have too many games. But can one have too many?

Fabula Ultima Offers A Good Beginning To A Final Fantasy

Yes, there are really tough battles, but there's also more casual combats that pop up. I can see why the game might want to skip those though. Come to think of it, they just tend to be fillers in video games.

Fabula Ultima Offers A Good Beginning To A Final Fantasy

It's pretty clear when the points get handed out. I don't see anything vague: Beginning of session Fumble Villain entrance Choosing to invoke trait to fail Surrendering GM Villain scene How often these come up will be set in stone, like beginning of session or villain entrance. Others will...

Fabula Ultima Offers A Good Beginning To A Final Fantasy

With FU we all leaned into the JRPG tropes and cut loose with the silly and the drama. Get caught? You know escape will be quick, and all your weapons and supplies will be sitting in a chest just around the corner. Worried that your rebellious princess is a cliché? Don't!

Fabula Ultima Offers A Good Beginning To A Final Fantasy

They are on pages 96-99. The Ultima points for villains are on pages 100-103. You start with 3. Gain one at start of a session if you have none. Gain 1 whenever you fumble. Gain 1 whenever a Villain makes an entrance. If you have 0 and surrender you gain 2. As an optional rule you can gain 1 if...

Fabula Ultima Offers A Good Beginning To A Final Fantasy

Hmm, I found the guidelines fine. And even when the players ran out of Fabula points, they managed. One of the players tended to forget to use them and her points piled up. She was still effective. In fact, I had to increase the danger level past the recommendation to give my players more of a...
