    D&D 5E (2014) Best D&D 5e alternate ruleset?

We backed the latest C&C edition. Been curious about it for years.

    D&D 5E (2014) Best D&D 5e alternate ruleset?

We've been doing a lot of outdoor stuff with Shadowdark. Works great. There is also a pulp mode if you want more epic heroes.

Critical Role Is Critical Role Scripted

I haven't watched much Critical Role. I did see their Candela Obscura episodes and the players seemed to get confused and make silly assumptions and engage in typical player behaviours, so no, not scripted. Other than better voice acting and focussing, not that different from our table. 😊

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

WotC does seem bent on removing a lot of hindrances or minor frustrations. Those delicious tricky decisions are vanishing as well. It's not a huge problem, but balancing risk vs. reward or sacrificing one thing in order to do another adds teeth to the game.

Spells: do you prefer Rotes or Dynamic?

I really like Ars Magica, with memorized spells being safe and predictable and spells characters throw together on the fly being riskier to cast. I also like short spell descriptions that are open to interpretation like you find in Knave. Lots of opportunity to take a flavourful description...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

I think so too. If I'm recalling correctly, rolling fell out of favour for a while, but came back because players got bored with the standard array and didn't care for the point buy system.

    D&D 5E (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

Mechanically the ranger is fine. I don't like the flavour because my personal fantasy of ranger is not the constant muttering of spells.

Does how fast you age and learn really matter when a few months of the adventuring life will send you hurtling up several levels? 😏

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

All the systems I've seen (snd there are a lot now) do mixed species really well, without unbalancing choices. The heritage/culture system in LU is fun. (I just recently made a wood elf raised by fire elementals. His forest was destroyed and he's now a champion dedicated to retribution.) And...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

It's not that the concept of half elves and half orcs are disappearing from the other games, it's the other games are opening things up to any kind of mixed species. Level Up, Pathfinder, Tales of the Valiant, DC20 all have ways to mix and match species traits. Ghostfire Gaming is updating Grim...

    Worlds of Design: Not-So-Friendly Fire

In my game a missed arrow could absolutely hit a different target that's not a buddy, or just not hit anything.

    Worlds of Design: Not-So-Friendly Fire

I allow missile fire into melee. I make sure players are aware they risk hitting an ally if they miss their target. If they miss, there's a chance a friend is hit instead but it's not automatic The likelihood of friendly fire depends on the chaos of the scene. I like how really skilled archers...

D&D General Grateful for Old-School Essentials

I was sold on the little hardcover books in boxes. It was a very silly reason to buy a game, but am loving it! So easy to tinker with and add bits and pieces to. Dolmenwood has me excited but waiting on the physical fulfillment.

D&D General A Gnome and a Halfling have a Baby. What is it?

I made a gnome/halfling in Level Up and called her a gnobbit. 😁

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Cleric"

It feels like WotC doesn't like the whole idea of a very small chance of "something big" happening. . That's fine. The old ability is wonky. Why keep the name then? Explain your positioning and rename the 2024 version. Maybe my complaint seems trivial but I've always had a pet peeve about game...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Cleric"

It works once per long rest. The juicy narrative bits will start feeling mundane. Powerful, yes, but not miraculous. As @Aldarc says, "glorified spell slot." And since it's 100% reliable now, maybe too potent? Do we want a back up Raise Dead ready to go?

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Cleric"

I agree. Calling on Divine Intervention means the character is calling for help and cannot control the outcome. Choosing a spell is not this. Now the old DI wasn't the best and could have used tweaking but I don't like the new one. JC says ability is no longer "Mother May I?" And I am left...

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

It's important to speak out against harmful attitudes. Yes, Gygax is dead, but unfortunately, those that refuse to acknowledge his sexism, or even defend it it as harmless, should be challenged. Hatred is again becoming more vocal. It's loud, but I believe a minority. We can counter it.

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

We really didn't! All those TV shows with women constantly needing help or just being an ornament. I loved the old Magnum tv show, but did men ever hire him? I remember nervously walking into this dingy old comic shop to get latest issue of X-men. But the guy at counter was chill and just...

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

I grew up in the 70s. And yes, definitely more awful attitudes. But it wasn't everyone. My grandparents, for example, who were born in the early 1900s, genuinely treated everyone with respect. My parents also raised me with attitudes only slightly different from today. I did have to learn how to...
