    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

And the PF1 archetypes didn't just add a few features at set levels. Some archetypes just tweaked the class while others were almost complete rewrites. I really like PF1 archetypes system. The spell-less guide is a good one to look at.

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

It's not that the individual changes over the years, on their own, are bad. It's the accumulation of them. The changes we are getting for 2024 combined with the decisions made back in 2014 tipped it too far for me. Of course, everyone will have their own preferences.

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

I'm not looking for a game with more dead characters. GMs can easily make more dead characters. My point was that all these little changes have been eroding away the hard or dramatic choices that I enjoy in a rpg. I call it "consequence free D&D" because the game cushions players from bad...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

Shadowdark is so easy to tinker with. I'm playing in a Shadowdark game and my husband, who is running it, loves creating things for it. He says it really gets his creative juices going. I'm running a Shadowdark game in pulp mode, using Theros. It is easy to blend in the extra goodies Theros...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

Of course we can, but I am looking at the game as written. As written, these changes, happening bit by bit, are taking away those hard choices that can make the game exciting. And I'm pretty easy going.

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I don't need my 5e games to be more deadly or darker themed, but I'm finding the game to become more and more "consequence free" for the players. Some examples off the top of my head: 1. Animal buddies/familiars are all spiritual. If they die, can be resummoned. Can also be dismissed if having...

D&D General Professor DM from Dungeon Craft has a special message…

He often jokes that he can do what he wants on his channel because he doesn't depend on it for his sole income. YT channel pays for fun stuff and unexpected expenses. Looks like treatment went well and very high chance cancer is gone. Wishing Professor DM good health!

Professor DM is American. He teaches high school English. Maybe teaches theatre too?

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

I think the ranger is my favourite class in Level Up. I love spell-less rangers. If monks, rogues and barbarians can do lots of cool things without spells, rangers should too. Too many classes running around with spells make wizards seem like the least adept, since they are stuck with spellbooks.

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

The survivors then go on to level one with their 0 level hp added in and proficiency in any starting weapons and armour they have from 0 level. I had a wizard who could use a longsword because he had it in the funnel. The perk for funnel survivors is starting a little bit tougher at level 1.

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

It's not expected that players just do funnels over and over again. That'd be a lot of wasted pages on spells and class features otherwise. You do the funnel (or not) and then start regular play. And it is actually possible to reach higher levels. 😁

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

The disappearance of half-elves and half-orcs is going to seem odd in the 2024 books. Not seeing them in the art, not seeing them pop up as NPCs, but goliath and aasimar all over the place changes things. And since it's not a new edition, it'll especially feel like they just went poof.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

As a GM, I would offer advice if asked but wouldn't tell players what they have to take based on their description. As a player, I know my character's strengths and skills better than anyone else.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

I think you're right but their reasoning doesn't hold up since they have lots of examples.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

And then there's the whole "I failed at my previous job/training" angle. For example: I was a wizard apprentice but spent precious study hours partying with the locals instead. I'm taking a bonus in Charisma and Constitution (socializing and surviving heavy drinking and bar fights explain these...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

I strongly feel that customizable backgrounds should be front and centre in the background section of the book. Have examples, sure, but encourage players to create their own or tinker with the examples. I want to see players create backgrounds like Pearl Diver, Lamplighter, Rat Catcher...

D&D General (SPOILERS for Vecna: Eve of Ruin) Are My Standards Too High for Adventures?

I believe the idea is to use fewer words, which gives you room for more content. WotC and Paizo have way too many long paragraphs. The OSR/NSR in recent years have many adventure writers which can pack a lot of punch in way fewer pages. If an adventure needs more room to breathe, tighten up the...

How do you keep your GM notes?

Just scribbled notes in a notebook. People like giving me fancy journals with pretty covers, so I've been using those.

Plenty Of Time To Die: A Shadowdark Review

I've been playing in a long term campaign. It's been working really well. Just reached 6th level. We started with maximum hit points, just to reduce early deaths. Our group is very careful and we have had very few deaths. We are using supplemental material from the Cursed Scrolls and Unnatural...
