D&D 5E (2014) Light release schedule: More harm than good?

They'll definitely leverage the 50th Anniversary somehow, but that doesn't necessarily mean a 6E, or even a 5.5. Depends how they handle the "living ruleset" over the next few years, really.

D&D 5E (2014) Light release schedule: More harm than good?

I feel the same way, but the way I see it is this - the intention is for there to never need to be a 6E, or at least not for a very long time. So we'll eventually see the full range of 100+ books they put out for, say 3.5, but on a 20 year timescale rather than a 4 year one.

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

I've never so strongly wished for the ability to award 2x the XP as I do this very moment, so seconding this will have to do. The return of Dragon and Dungeon would go a long way towards making everyone a heck of a lot happier!

D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls explaining his view of D&D and how it should be merchandize

Precisely. I think (or at least hope) that the plan is that in 2035, you could walk into a Target or a Walmart and find the 5th Edition Player's Handbook on the shelf, next to the Monster Manual and DMG. People keep downplaying the wall of books as an issue, but we're talking about shelf-space...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

I'm dead center in between the both of you here, and I don't think think the gulf is actually that wide - I'm sure chriton227 understands full well what you mean when you say Pathfinder (or 13th Age, or Labyrinth Lord, or whatever) is very much "D&D", as much as AD&D or 3E or 4E or 5E is. Just...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

See I dunno, I was quite interested by the concept of a Numenera game, but then I actually saw it and realized I'm quite happy having left isometric games behind after BG2. Not familiar with Wasteland 2 but a Google image search reaffirms I'm just not a fan of that style. I wonder if it has...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Right, but if most folks spent much money on D&D we wouldn't be having this conversation at all, we'd be discussing the next six months of monthly hardcovers! Very few players buy everything Wizards put out; some buy maybe a fee splatbooks a year if they're particularly interested in the...

More on SWORD COAST LEGENDS: Campaign Tools & Starting Races

I believe Mirtek was referring to Neverwinter, the D&D MMO released in 2013, not Neverwinter Nights. B-)

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Honestly, I think the only real disagreement is that last point, and really we won't know for at least a year or two who's right. It comes down to whether you think the brand-centric tie-in strategy (keep a lightly-supported RPG alive to build the fan-base for the D&D movies / video games /...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Sure, there's nothing wrong with that - I'd love to see campaign setting books myself. I do have a question for you though - how many campaign setting books do you expect them to put out with 8 people on staff, and how soon do you realistically expect them to announce one? I'm sure we'll see...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Right, but they've flat out told us that they aren't going to be the same frequency of releases for 5E, so how is there a "lack of communication as to their future products" on their part? They've announced their upcoming products for the first half of 2015, and we know there'll be another...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Alright, look I know there's been a few snarky comments going back and forth over Wizards's release cycle in a couple of threads the last few weeks, and while I don't think I was particularly antagonistic in any of my posts I'll retroactively apologize now if I was because I seriously think I've...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

Heh, I hear what you're saying - but I think they've pretty much told us that the only thing on the docket in the next 6 months is going to be Princes of the Apocalypse. Sure, they could drop a surprise summer hardcover on us, but everything else they've released has been announced several...

D&D 5E (2014) Reasons Why My Interest in 5e is Waning

I'm sorry, wanting more content is a perfectly valid opinion, but posts like this just don't make any sense to me. Wizards has told us EXACTLY what their plans are. They've announced new board games, MMO expansion news, the Sword Coast Legends game and their RPG books for the first half of 2015...

D&D 5E (2014) Light release schedule: More harm than good?

Exactly. I'm ashamed to say I haven't read any of the Discworld novels since Making Money for that exact reason. I'd started Unseen Academicals but ended up putting it down a chapter or two in because I realized it'd been several years since I'd read a Discworld book about the UU staff and...

D&D 5E (2014) Light release schedule: More harm than good?

Heh, I'm the DM of one such group, and we started with Pathfinder - not the Beginner Box, straight up "hey guys time to select your Feats, why don't you browse the 1,000,000+ on the PFSRD for a little while?" Pathfinder. To say I wish we'd started with 5E and the Starter Set is something of an...

D&D 5E (2014) Light release schedule: More harm than good?

If I'm reading you correctly here, you seem to think that the bread and butter of WotC (well, the D&D division thereof) is books for the D&D RPG line. With the printing costs on hardcover books and online stores like Amazon cutting down on their margin significantly, I guarantee you they are...

D&D 5E (2014) Light release schedule: More harm than good?

It's not hard to believe you're expecting that at all, but that doesn't mean they will actually release more than that. It comes down to which of the following is true: WotC has plans for more products coming out soon and they just inexplicably aren't talking about them, justifying the "Wizards...

D&D 5E (2014) Light release schedule: More harm than good?

It's less that 5E is lacking in regularity and more that the regularity is on a longer timescale than you'd prefer, though. WotC isn't going to spontaneously announce "Oh, by the way, we've got some minis and a new book out at your FLGS right now, go and buy them already!" - everything on...

    D&D 5E (2014) My Crazy Theory about 2015 5e

That assumes that Concentration isn't working as intended. Just because a given group dislikes the effect a rule has doesn't mean that that rule is broken. I fully expect errata and rules fixes to come in the wake of the feedback surveys, but Concentration strikes me as something that merits an...
