    D&D 4E The Quadratic Problem—Speculations on 4e

The situation is made worse by the fact that in some situations a small change in BAB or AC results in a disproportionate change in K and T. I.e. if a monster needs a 19 to hit you, a +1 AC boost will double your staying power, since you are hit only half as often. If the monster can't fly and...

    Epic Spell Casting Times

You build an epic spell using seeds and adding factors. Each seed and factor has a DC, and you add the DCs to get the spellcraft DC for the final spell. Some of the factors are mitigating factors- they lower the final DC. One common mitigating factor is increased casting time. You can...

August - What are you reading?

Oh no! I killed the thread. Oh well- soon it will be time for the September "What are you reading?"

Order of the Stick #483 - Broken Stick

I thought that Vaarsuvius had dropped Necromancy and Conjuration to become an evocation specialist? Though I suppose players could still yell about that decision. To be fair to Vaarsuvius, though, teleport was in the school of transmutation in 3rd edition, and Vaarsuvius wasn't choosing to...

August - What are you reading?

I'm rereading Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series. I discovered there was a final book in the series I hadn't hard about: Diplomatic Immunity. Not as good as A Civil Campaign but entertaining none the less. She's written some fantasy, too; Curse of Chalion is my favorite book of all...

E6: The Game Inside D&D (with PDFs!)

Eventually, sure. But only when the best feats have all been taken, which won't be for a while. If a fighter capstone feat is the ability to treat his BAB and fighter level as two higher, then there are quite a number of excellent feats and feat chains that he can complete. And the +2 to Str...

Raise Dead (and similiar) = Straight xp penalty

If you have a character who is at the top of the xp range for his level, 750 xp/level might not drop him a level at all. A 10th level character with 54,000 xp drops to 46,500 xp, but is still 10th level. On the other hand, a character who is near the bottom of a level can lose more than one...

Resist Energy, Mass - Encounter Problem

Make sure that they get *some* benefit from the resist energy spells. You want to encourage them to use foresight when adventuring, and prudence should be rewarded.

Spells per encounter instead of per day??

I like Vrecknidj's notion of charms vs spells. Reserve feats are a gesture in that direction. I like Firelance's approach more than any spell point variation, but it should exclude some of the out of combat spells.

"How to make a Monster Manual Pt II" article

A lot of this design philosophy was used in the 3.0 +> 3.5 redesign. Compare the 3.0 Marilith spell-like abilities to a 3.5 Marilith. Common elements are bolded. 3.0: At will-animate dead, bestow curse, chaos hammer, cloudkill, comprehend languages, darkness, desecrate, detect good, detect...

Spells per encounter instead of per day??

My favorite spell point system is 5 spell points per level, and each spell costs 1 + spell level spell points. It makes spellcasters a little stronger at lower levels, and a little weaker at higher levels. Which makes them more balanced over all, imho. The "encounter-based" variant I devised...

    Unearthed Arcana Incantations

The incantations all seem more specific than the "real" spells. The example of Xecilgarasp among the bones (summoning a specific Bebelith to guard a tomb) is maybe *too* specific for, say, raise dead. But an incantation that raises a person who was killed by magic... that might work. If you...

    Undead (my players stay out!)

Animate Dead is 3rd level (4th for wizards), not 1st. And ghasts transmit ghoul fever, which turns its victims into ghouls (or ghasts). Zombies, on the other hand, can't make more zombies. So it's not quite as weird as it seems; the higher level spell is not that much higher, and the...

Scrying and Teleportation... Deus Ex Machina? ANYONE PLAYING UNDER ME STAY OUT!

If you are going to intervene in the situation (by means of a DMNPC or otherwise), do the absolute minimum necessary. Using an 8th level spell, two 5th level spells and a 4th level spell is overkill if a 4th level spell is all that is needed. Have a mad alchemist with an experimental elixir...

E6: The Game Inside D&D (with PDFs!)

I very carefully wrote "Eberron", not "E6erron" or "E8erron". :) In any event, I would see what normal 6th level characters in the campaign setting could do. If they have access to something, great. If not, too bad.

Scrying and Teleportation... Deus Ex Machina? ANYONE PLAYING UNDER ME STAY OUT!

I think the problem is with the logic of the situation, myself. Why did the high level cleric choose that particular time to cast discern location on the party? Does he do it every day? How many times a day? If he has that much spare time (and spare spell slots), why didn't he go to the town...

E6: The Game Inside D&D (with PDFs!)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Eberron depicted as a campaign setting with very few high level characters? If you needed a 9th (or 11th, or 13th...) level wizard in Eberron, how hard would it be to find one?

    Revenance + Revivify

One of the nice things about true rez is that you can use it days or years after the death of the person, and you don't even need the body. Revivify gives the same effect but greatly restricts the range of the spell. Instead of years you have only a round; not only do you need the body, but...

ry's Threats, Rewards, Assets, and Problems (TRAPs)

This is tantalizing, but a little mysterious. In some of the examples it seems unclear what the difference is between a threat and a problem, or between a reward and a resource. To me it seems like a problem is an indirect or potential threat, and a resource is an indirect or potential reward...
