ICV2 Reports WotC Sues over Bogus M:TG Tournaments

Nevermind, I got it... Basically it looks like some individuals had setup some bogus tournaments (that is, tournaments that didn't exist) to get special cards solely for the purpose of then turning around and selling them. It appears WoTC internal caught them in the act.

Anybody want me to search PACER for it?

    Dresden Files RPG PreRelease?

Over on the LoTFP blog, Evil Hat revealed a few things. LotFP: RPG: The RPG Industry is Dying... The thing that bugged me was hearing that somebody decided to leak the PDF. I wish people would have better ethics about this kind of thing. A company with such a progressive attitude (PDF...

Did Gygax owe a bit of thanks to WotC?

He was complete out of regular communication with WoTC for years. The playtesting for 3e was based on a direct request from Peter Adkinson--I believe he was actually paid for his review/test/comments. The only other playtest I remember was him playing a 3e game as playtest for Luke and Ernie's...

I feel the same way. :)

Did Gygax owe a bit of thanks to WotC?

To be honest, EGG was a lot more available to us as soon as late 1996. The problem is I don't think a lot of gamers knew where to look. Part of the problem is it seems the last decade of "The Internet" is almost akin to the Dark Ages, in terms of what we lost. EGG started joining some...

    4E & Gygax

Just as an FYI, After the DJ settlement resulted in EGG abandoning the game, he was working on several treatments for computer games. The big one, Hunters of Ralk, was cancelled. (It was going to be science fantasy). Gary had a few game designs that he was figuring out what to do with. One...

Did Gygax owe a bit of thanks to WotC?

A couple of points. I don't think it was WoTC that brought him "out of obscurity", but the rise of the Internet itself. Gary did not start using the Internet himself until around 1996, and he started by having informal chats on Marcray's Keep, had a web site for a brief period, and setup some...

    4E & Gygax

Uh, guys, Jon Creffield and I got the play test rules along with Gary Gygax, at his request, so he most definitely did read the rules and comment on them. Monte Cook has read his critiques as well. It's true that Gary's opinion of the game went a bit more negative as time went on...but then...

    4E & Gygax

Having been in communication and working with Gary for several years, I can say the following. He did nothing for 3e for WoTC outside of the following. 1) He was consulted to review the 3e rules by Peter Adkison. 2) He and Arneson were at GenCon to talk about the 3e ruleset. 3) He did some...

    What is OSR about?

Keep in mind I was replying to Ourph, where he implied the very word itself was tainted.

    What is OSR about?

Well, technically I think nostalgia starts 20 rather than 30 years in the past. Usually around 30 is when you start to want to hear the pop music hits from your past. But it's sort of nebulous. We'll probably be starting with the 90s oldies pretty soon. (Although the 80s oldies BS themselves...

    What is OSR about?

Interestingly enough, I think if somebody like you had come out with OSRIC first (and probably as a publisher and not as a free rule set), Gygax might have supported that. When Gary wrote his manuscripts for Yggsburg, for instance, he used AD&D short-hand--somebody else converted it to C&C...

    What is OSR about?

Well, I hate to say it, but nostalgia is a real word with a real meaning (and I am using the modern term, not the 18th century version which just tried to define it as a combination of homesickness and battle fatigue). It is only an insult when used as such. The term "video-gamey" is worded a...

    What is OSR about?

Well, yes, but you are missing the point I am trying to make in that, while I don't think nostalgia plays a role in everything involved, it's hard to ignore the nostalgic elements of some of the posters. I think it's just as bad to say "this has absolutely nothing to do with it", as it is to...

    Gygax Memorial General Update

FYI--while thinking of this, I can relay something I think a lot of people might want to bid on... When I visited Gary the last November of his life, I remember clearly seeing in the upstairs room a framed picture of the Players Handbook portrait by Dave Trampier. Assuming that's the original...

    What is OSR about?

Well, as far as I am concerned, there is a sense of nostalgia in this that can be measured objectively. I know I am not using the word with snark or as a pejorative, and I personally refuse to avoid every using that word just because some OS fans are considering it a virtual swear word. For...

    What is OSR about?

Well, if you're addressing my comments, I never used the term nostalgia as a "dirty word", and I believe part of what's just been called the "500 blogger" movement is in part a reflection of that nostalgia. I think there's a knee-jerk defensive reaction to use of that word. Too many fans of...

    What is OSR about?

The problem is from what I've seen, the OSR is not just about "being positive". Even in the early days of Dragonsfoot there is a lot of put-downs and angry vibes, such as people who are immature enough to use the terms "threetard" and "fouron", use terms like TETSNBN for 3e, etc. I mean, if...

    What is OSR about?

Keep in mind I am talking about the "R"--the reference to revival-Renaissance. The term OSR only appeared a few years ago, I don't even believe it was used before Gygax's death. I never heard it before that. And I used the term "critical mass" I remember Ryan Dancey saying that there were a...
