    Bring Back Modrons

The one thing I don't understand with the criticisms of the original non-clockwork concept is, why is a perfect geometric being "silly", and the cthulluesqe far-relam, chaos beasts, etc., are better. I never saw them as sily. The key thing about Modrons as Gygax conceived them are they are...

    Bring Back Modrons

I always hated the planescape "reboot" of these creatures. The original MM2 shows them as geometric shapes, not clockwork robots. I thought it was a lot weirder and more original than going to the clockwork/steampunk cliche. Biological creatures of order so alien the masses appear as...

Pathfinder 1E "Pathfinder" is the name bad marketing in the internet era?

Keep in mind, anybody who is intelligent enough to use a search engine would likely know how to add terms to narrow this stuff down. Anybody searching for "bleach" and who wanted the Anime/Manga instead of Clorox or Teeth Whitening stuff can just type in Bleach Manga or Bleach Soul Reaper or...

Pathfinder 1E "Pathfinder" is the name bad marketing in the internet era?

Dungeons and Dragons has 35 years of Brand-Building. Pathfinder, unfortunately, is a more common word, and as a trademark/identifier for a specific game is less obvious. ("Pathfinding" for instance is a key to developing computer games). But then again, give it time to build.

    On the marketing of 4E

Well, all I can say is that D&D was able to last for 30 years without a Radical Reboot. They were able to do it in the past with the 2e/3e mix. Considering all the effort that went into building 3e, I don't think there was any reason to make fighters equal to spellcasters in terms of options...

    On the marketing of 4E

Actually, I begin to think the marketing was deliberately designed at least in part to be divisive like that because of the following. They were changing the game radically. While there's a lot of argument back and forth about this, from an objective standard things changed radically. You...

    On the marketing of 4E

One thing to also remember too is that 3e was a sudden shift from the 2e mindset. In 2e, kits and other customizations existed, but they were suggested for concepts from the role-playing perspective, or the "story" side of things. In fact, I forget if its the PHB or DMG, but the 2nd Edition...

T1: The Village of Hommlet - why are the PCs there?

I think there was some mention of it in either the reprint or the T1-4 combination. I'd have to pull it out though... The Computer Game from Trokia gave an origin encounter before you entered the town, different depending on your alignment.

How to respectfuly disagree with EGG?

Ironically, in doing a search for "Higgins Armory Museum" I came across this old thread. I bolded the emphasis here. I think we outta add it to our signatures. Based on what I know about EGG's personality, I think he would have disliked 4e a lot more, yet would have found a few good gems...

    Gary Gygax Question

I'll ask Gail next time I speak to her, but I believe Gary was cremated and not buried anywhere. There's a project to get a statue or memorial to EGG placed in one of the parks in LG, and assuming all goes well with the approval and funding processes, that would probably be the best place to...

A road not taken: What if there had been no 4E

Well, yes, I know it would obviously bring up the cost, but is the markup between a Hard vs. Soft cover just covering the cost, or is there more profit per item that can be exploited. (Remember, when CDs came out supposedly the prices were marked up a lot higher than the cost of manufacturing...

    PDFS--Of the WotC Court Case

Actually, if you read the judgement carefully, it says legal fees will each be paid by their own parties. So WoTC is paying their lawyers, and the defendant is paying his own (which being pro se, means none). So right now the only award is damages due to the violation and potential lost income...

    PDFS--Of the WotC Court Case

Well, technically this thread was dead for a few months. After the discussion ends, it will likely be dead for a while. I don't plan on checking again for at least a few more months--those documents cost pennies per page view and I think the earliest I'd bother checking again would be around...

Are Kids interested in Pen & Paper RPGs?

Yes, but you are ignoring the existence of Basic D&D, three versions which were produced under Gygax's reign at the company. Not to mention the merchandising including a toy line from LJN, the cartoon, the coloring book, etc. There were a lot of kids who got the Basic sets first. I think...

A road not taken: What if there had been no 4E

That chart is really interesting. I've been really curious about the rise of hardcovers and the fall of softcover books. Wouldn't it be cheaper to produce softcover books, or have printing costs fallen? Is there a greater margin on hardcover? Is it an excuse to jack up the prices a few...

    PDFS--Of the WotC Court Case

While the debates have started again, I wanted to see if I could ask the following, especially those with legal backgrounds. It was mentioned that we have one person who knows one of the defendants who is ignoring the suit--and I assume that person lives in the US. Does that mean the person...

    PDFS--Of the WotC Court Case

I think if I was on a jury I'd be skeptical of "somebody else did it", unless they can back it up with better proof. If somebody wanted to prove legitimate computer compromises, there are ways to go about doing it. Get the ISP involved--have the lawyers get records looking for activity. See...

Honoring, Respecting, and Quoting Gary--Some Concerns (let's make sure we are honest)

That situation is not the same thing. To clarify, here it goes. Let me use the following as a preface: Before he died, Steve Gerber has stated to other creators that anybody who says that they are doing a "tribute" or "honoring" him if they tried to write Howard the Duck, Omega the Unknown...

How to respectfuly disagree with EGG?

Having known the man, I can say the following. You can disagree with EGG on several things and he wouldn't mind. One discussion I had with him before he died was about the compartmentalized mentality of fans. I mentioned that there are people who have a lot of hostility towards stuff that...
