Game Shop advice for south central MA

Unless something new opened up recently, you don't have much. The only place I could think of that has more than your chain bookstore variety of RPGs would be That's Entertainment ( That's Entertainment -New England's Largest Collectible Store! ) on Park Ave in Worcester, but they are mostly a...

    Wizards' DnD Downloads Dead?

I think it's just called "going out of print". At least that's what they called it in the old days. People should not effect things to remain in print forever. I think people get a little spoiled by the Internet nowadays. Regardless of whether a company or individual releases stuff or not...

    Gygax Memorial Update: GenCon Schedule

I don't know, I know there are no current short-term plans to publish Gary's work, as I have said elsewhere on this forum.

    Gygax Memorial Update: GenCon Schedule

Hi All, I talked to Gail Gygax a few weeks back and I have some news regarding the Gygax Memorial. First of all, the current plans for the Memorial Site are in a bit of flux. It doesn't look like Gary's memorial will be put in the Library Park, as the Lake Geneva Board does not appear to want...

Did WotC underestimate the Paizo effect on 4E?

Oh, I didn't want to imply that Paizo could buy D&D. WoTC happened during a time before major corporate investment occured with any gaming property. But maybe at some point one of these guys might beat the market share, or get a significant share. And if Hasbro does decide to shelve it, who...

Did WotC underestimate the Paizo effect on 4E?

I'm not sure if that's to confirm what I said or to argue against. I never said that there wasn't competition, just that sometimes the unexpected happens. WoTC used to be a little fish, then they purchased TSR lock-stock-and barrel. Stuff like that could happen again.

Did WotC underestimate the Paizo effect on 4E?

That's not a sign of "being irrational", rather, I think it is the result of departments or internal corporate conflicts. There were probably people for supporting 3pp, and people against it. And I think both arguments could be logical, informed, and rational. The way they botched it was...

Did WotC underestimate the Paizo effect on 4E?

Two things when discussing this. Saying WoTC underestimated things refers to the company as a monolithic group mind, which from what I've seen is not the case. At some rather small companies I've seen different marketing managers and CEOs come and go, and there can me major changes in company...

    Is Greyhawk Relevant?

Depends on what you mean by "relevance". Greyhawk, FR, etc., are all settings, and as such they exist independently of either the vox populi (what's popular) and trends. There is no objective "evolution" of the hobby, from what I can see, just different trends. And I hate the term "generic"...

    The Jabberwock

I can't remember if the Jabberwock ever appeared in the DungeonLand/Land Beyond the Magic Mirror series. I remember an old Dragon (around the 50-60 range) that stated it out. Jabberwocky is a weird poem in general. This is probably the best commentary on that. YouTube - The Muppet Show -...

Do we want one dominant game, and why?

My own take is a little complex. Do I think that there should be one or more major players in the hobby and industry, yes. Without a large player, you can't get the games into mass market stores, and we need at least one or more archetypical games to get the young people exposed to the hobby...

    Dragon Age: Origins

I enjoyed that one. A lot of people complain about Bioware's DLC--mostly being "too short". But I think this one hit all the good things--had new voice acting and music, dealt with a popular character, and had an interesting story.

    Dragon Age 2

Oh, I was afraid you might be one of the people who think a voiced protagonist a la Mass Effect doesn't allow you to "roleplay properly", or upset that the change in character means that DA:O is "pointless". I'm seeing Bioware take a lot of heat on the forums for stuff that, to me, doesn't...

    Blizzard "Real ID" on Forums

To be honest, I sort of wish more people would use their real names. Clay Shirky, one of the guys who talks about how the Internet will change everything, says that there will probably be more pressure to reveal real identities to prevent the anonymous troll fighting that occurs. I usually try...

    Dragon Age 2

I don't see what the problem is. Just because there's a more defined persona doesn't mean you still won't get to decide the fate or the plot. Honestly, all the customization is an illusion that you get in CRPGs, you are limited by the flags and trees--it's what Dougless Niles once named the...

Where did the Great Wheel come from?

Wrong, it was introduced in Deities and Demigods and was created by Gygax. (See above).

What do celebrities do between gigs?

For people in Hollywood, this is one of the reasons why actors make high salaries, it's to prepare for the downtime. I remember when René Auberjonois, during the time DS9 was going strong, was interviewed by a DJ. The DJ asked him to whisper his salary. DJ: You make THAT much PER EPISODE...

    Expedition to the Barrier Peaks

Yeah, I have to say you do a very good job of cleaning up those articles, and making them truly encyclopedic, backing them up with sources and making sure the "cultural impact" is commented on.

[Trailer] Last Airbender: what's the appeal?

You can pretty much get ATAB on Amazon for about $26 each season, which IMO is better than going to the movies. You get 20 half-hour episodes per season. A better entertainment value, IMO. :)

June '10: What Are You Playing?

I actually enjoyed playing Alpha Protocol. If you liked Mass Effect 1 or Deus Ex, you'll probably like this game. While the reviews are mixed, I enjoyed it, save for the relative shortness of the game (probably 20 hours tops). It does have a very good replay value if you are interested in...
