(Magic) Tell Me the Conceits of Your Setting

Going to join the chorus on the first set of questions: it's just magic. Neither my players nor myself have really questioned the polymorphic spells. As for the others, Animate Dead: No real change. Fundamentally the same as animate object. Create Undead: Binds a soul which has not yet...

    Who Started Playing D&D Indirectly?

I guess my first exposure was the D&D cartoon as well. But I don't think I realized D&D was an actual game at the time. Then I got a computer in the late 80s and started in on the old goldbox SSI games. Though technically, I think Hillsfar was the first one I played before I jumped back to...

    Wall of Fire and Movement

Ah, alrighty. I didn't realize that was one of the hot topics round here (yea yea, bad, horribly overused pun). Anyway, thanks for that. I'll go ahead and come up with my ruling then.

    Wall of Fire and Movement

If a creature moves along the primary AoE for a Wall of Fire (i.e. the 2d6+Level portion of the effect), should damage rolled for each square of movement, or just the first square? For the situation, imagine a 5-foot wide hallway with a Wall of Fire effect cast along its length. I'm hung up on...

    Tact-Tiles: The End

If say, just for fun, that you werethe co-owner of a company who acquired the rights to Tact-Tiles, then you, sir, are brilliant. As one who never had the pleasure of owning the originals, the idea of clear tiles seems like a good one. If they worked out in practice how I think they would, they...

    The Best Gaming Table

As a DM, I'd want to game on the Ultimate Table. The DM station has much more usable space, and personally I like the aesthetics. But overall I think the Sultan is a bit more practical for a group. Plus, it has a higher WAF than the Ultimate, so that's how I voted.

Looking for a few, good ideas (Adventure help)

@Rechan: Putting a little pressure on the goliath is a good idea. Always a good thing to have the players squirm a little, even if there is no intent to call them on their lies. And I like the idea of the notes being picked up/intercepted by someone other than the merchant himself. That opens up...

A Paladin and a Cleric are praying to the same god, which is heard from first?

All other things being equal (same level, equally pious, equally devoted), I'd probably give deference to the paladin. Paladin's sacrifice a bit more, and I'd reward that sacrifice. Alternatively, if they are both doing this to "test their god", I'd probably punish both of 'em.

Looking for a few, good ideas (Adventure help)

Hey all, I'm hoping you all can help me with a bit of GMs block I'm having. One of my players, a tiefling spellthief, decided to surreptitiously threaten a not-so-honest merchant in the town they are visiting. She snuck into his home and place of business, leaving notes basically saying that...

    Campaign Styles : Plot-driven versus Character-driven

I voted for "playing in and prefer plot-driven games". However, that's really because it's all I've been exposed to. Character-driven games demand a specific skill-set from the DM that I haven't encountered; and I certainly don't have the right skills to pull it off. I think I'd enjoy a...

How do you make your races feel unique and/or more original?

At the beginning of our campaign, one of my players stated they wanted to be a cleric of Athena. I hadn't really given much thought to the campaign pantheon, and really just assumed I'd be using the default core. But since that player decided to go greek on me, I backfilled the entire history of...

    Changeover Poll

Still playing 3.5, haven't tried 4E yet (though I've read it). Nothing specific against 4E. We started the WotBS campaign a couple months before 4E came out, we're only midway through the third adventure, and we likely won't even talk about converting until we finish the campaign (one way or the...

Do you not play WOW? Forked Thread: Wil Wheaton plays and reviews 4th.

Hi, my name is Slander and I'm a warcrack addict. My last login date was October 16th, 2006. I actually got my fill of WoW before I even hit 60; I think I was 52 when I stopped. Admittedly, I played the hell out of it up until that point. But even by the mid-thirties, my motivation had switched...

    Do-it-yourself dice inking

For whatever reason, my dice have a horrible tendancy of losing their ink, sometimes within 3-4 weeks of purchase. Chessex, Gamescience, Crystal Caste ... none survive my (apparently) corrosive touch. So I've done a lot of hand-inking. Depending on the dice color, I'll either use extra-fine...

    Full Attacks and AoO Poll

If you are using an Exotic Ranged weapon (such as the Greatbow), the Exotic Weapon Master PrC from CW has Close Quarters Ranged Combat. Never found anything else (and rightly so, IMO).

I order pretty much exclusively from the interweb, but I try and go with the dedicated rpg/hobby retailers rather than Amazon or the like.

Significance of 3rd Party Publishers: Overrated?

I think it is overrated by people on the internet. Overall, I think it's just about right.

Do you play more for the story or the combat?

Combat. Story definitely is important. I wouldn't want to play DnD if it was just a series of combat encounters. But DnD is our group's choice of game because of the way it facilitates fantasy combat. DnD doesn't [in any edition] do anything particularly unique to facilitate a story, other...
