D&D 4E Mike Mearls on how 4E could have looked

I have played in some campaigns that have implemented these rules. The wizard had vastly more "spells known" than the Sorcerer, but the Sorc had vastly more spell slots to work with. I disagree with #8 though - all your other suggestions lean toward making things more fluid (with risk), this...

Probably 13 - Suggestion is 3rd level. Forget is 2nd level, but he appears to be Heightening it. ;-) On the topic of game time -- I only use this when there are specific deadlines or campaign clocks that matter. Otherwise I tend to handwave time away. "Shopping takes the party three days...

D&D 4E Mike Mearls on how 4E could have looked

Running an AD&D campaign in college [yes, that long ago], the most deadly foe the party faced was a lich. Not the lich itself, actually, but his slightly less powerful lieutenant, a pure fighter. A fighter encased in the heaviest armor available, carrying the biggest shield, and wielding a...

D&D 4E Mike Mearls on how 4E could have looked

Actually, 4e does state/suggest (DMG, I think) that the GM make sure to include minions for the [controller] wizard to clear. 4e considers wizards to be controllers, not DPS; rogues and rangers are (supposed to be) your DPS. Back to your question though, the 4e answer is yes. In fact, 4e goes...

D&D 4E Mike Mearls on how 4E could have looked

Imaro, there are "martial rituals" available to the martial characters, too. They tend to be noncombat things like hiding campsites and superior hunting or extraordinary tracking, or environmental survival, but some are also "next battle in 24 hours, get a buff to damage or defenses" for...

D&D 4E Mike Mearls on how 4E could have looked

Heroes of Steel CRPG makes the wizard characters just as MAD as the warrior characters. They need one stat to increase their number of spells (LORE), another to increase the size of their spells (CONJURE), a third for accuracy (SORCERY) -- and then the spells themselves have to be invested in...

D&D 4E Mike Mearls on how 4E could have looked

The Sword of Truth series has wizards. Wizards who primarily work subtle spells (Wizards's First Rule), but can also participate in warfare. One casts a spell that seeds the air with microfibers of glass, to slice up the lungs of an opposing army... which is then blown backwards by (a really...

D&D 4E Mike Mearls on how 4E could have looked

I'll throw out there that wizard "training" in Basic D&D (and I think AD&D, maybe later) took about 5-8 years longer than Fighter training. A 1st level human fighter was like 15-18 years old; a 1st level wizard was 22+. Anyone who's ever done martial arts or athletic training of any kind knows...

D&D 4E Mike Mearls on how 4E could have looked

I remember the point I wanted to make, and Manbearcat brought it up. In the game mechanics, the fighter swings 4 times, gets two hits, does 30 damage. He does this six "rounds" in a row, defeating the ogre champion at last. He has been hit by the ogre in return 6 times, suffering a a good 80...

D&D 4E Mike Mearls on how 4E could have looked

This is an excellent example, to which you can easily add villains (Bullseye, Deadshot), medieval figures (Robin Hood), and Greek Epics (Odysseus), and so on. Many many stories are "good brawn vs. evil magic". Many stories involving Knights are might-makes-right, and magic (or even archery) is...
