    D&D General Looking for D&D Play-By-Post Tips

The important thing is all the players go in a clump, so nobody is waiting for any other player to post. So you can let them go first (you always have more monsters), or roll initiative and take the average across each side, or any other system that ensures the characters all go at once.

    D&D General Looking for D&D Play-By-Post Tips

I recommend using an "Us > Them" initiative system. This will have balance implications, but the speed you gain will be well worth it. Be transparent with ACs and other combat info. You don't want to lose time with players asking if something hit. Outright ask your players to always mention...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone play 5e Perception rules as written?

To be fair, I handle most of it on my side of the fence. Their passive is 20? I count it as 15.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone play 5e Perception rules as written?

I can't remember the last time my group used torches. It's all bullseye lanterns, multiple continual flame spells, and thrown objects with the light spell cast on them, etc.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone play 5e Perception rules as written?

I definitely assign the -5 penalty if the characters are in Dim Light (or Darkness with Darkvision). That includes a -5 to their passive perception. I also assign the +2 AC when shooting at an enemy engaged in melee with an ally, unless the archer has a nice clear line of fire. This tends to...

D&D 5E (2014) Is trafficking in soul coins ostensibly evil?

The supernatural forces that judge your actions and determine what your alignment is are fallible. I think they tried to explain it away as greater planar forces above even the gods at one point, but it's basically just a handwave for the DM to make judgement calls.

D&D 5E (2014) Is trafficking in soul coins ostensibly evil?

Alignment was never completely objective, since it was determined by potentially fallible third parties. That still holds true in 5E, just with most ways to determine what those third parties think of you being stripped away. Though, there are still a few oddball cases like Descent into Avernus...

D&D 5E (2014) Is trafficking in soul coins ostensibly evil?

We considered this neutral since you're permanently ending the souls torment.

D&D General Alternate thought - rule of cool is bad for gaming

My groups are like this. We have a stable of 4-5 DMs with heavily cross-pollinated groups, and I cannot drum up enough interest for many game systems. I would love to run Pathfinder 2E, Geist: Sin Eater, Monster Hearts 2, Godbound, etc, But there are not enough takers. And yet, when someone...

D&D 5E (2024) What is your preferred naming for the 2014 and 2024 versions of D&D?

Survivor Edition Name! We can narrow it down to a final 2, and then the wrong one will win in a sudden flurry of midnight votes.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

I wish! I would love it if my players stepped foot into a library or consulted sages more often.

D&D 5E (2024) What is your preferred naming for the 2014 and 2024 versions of D&D?

5.0 and 5.5. The only other thing my groups sometimes call it is One D&D.

D&D 5E (2024) WotC has called the new ruleset 5.2. Why don't we?

Nobody has really called it anything in the groups I frequent. It's just "Oh, the SRD got updated" and everyone keeps calling it the SRD. Some of us know the specific iterations, but it's not discussed unless we get into the nitty gritty.

D&D 5E (2024) WotC has called the new ruleset 5.2. Why don't we?

5.5 has the most traction in the groups and discords I frequent, so that's likely what I'll use here as well. But I don't mind it having a dozen different names on here or Reddit, and think the confusion of everyone using different names will be mildly funny. :geek: Things will only get weird...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

Forbidden Lands does a fair job of capturing that Conan essence.

Google says they make holes in teeth.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playstyle Changes from 5E to 5.5E?

Hard to say so early. I fully intend to embrace 5.5 initially, but reserve final judgement until after I've played for about a year. I really need to experience the full product to get a proper feel for it.

D&D General D&D Assumptions Ain't What They Used To Be

There was even a petition by Jewish D&D players going around that affirmed they were fine with the use of the term phylactery. I think it got around 3k signatures before it lost steam.

D&D General Alternate thought - rule of cool is bad for gaming

I think the only negative consequence was rolling a Nat 1, with the positive consequence of advantage on a Nat 20. Essentially just rolling/fishing for an exteme result one way or the other. I may have misunderstood, though.

D&D General Build the "Definitive Pantheon"

It cracks me up that Critical Role actually did this specific thing. Even had the god in question come into conflict with Sehanine.
