Mark of Healing: use a healing power on an ally

I'd say it has to be an ally who is a target (not a side beneficiary) of a power with the Healing keyword. So, no shaman bonus healing, no Astral Seal beneficiaries, no PC who gets an incidental benefit from Rune of Mending. If it's not someone listed in the Target line of a power with the...

    Question about Earthfall Totem.

Yep. It's a primal attack power that you're using through the totem and it's knocking a creature prone. Therefore, it deals the extra 1d6 damage to the creatures that were knocked prone.

    Nerfing rules in game

If my players come up with a cool tactic that makes a combat way easier than expected, I applaud them. It's fun for them to stomp the crap out of the bad guys from time to time. If I think it's going to be problematic in the future, I might say after the combat, "Okay, that was fun this once...

    New Iconic

I know lots of people feel like it ruins the flavor of the game, but I hope things like wizard at-will spells stick around. I prefer the wizard and related classes to be able to use magic in a useful way all the time, rather than resorting to throwing darts.

What's the most you've ever spent on a single RPG-related item?

I spent $463.99 on the projector that I use exclusively for projecting RPG maps onto the tabletop. Money well spent in my case! Beyond that, I really haven't shelled out a lot of cash on more conventional gaming stuff. I guess the Pathfinder Core Rulebook is the most expensive conventional...

Online Games using Maptool: Need advice from the Pros

First, welcome to MapTool! I blog about my experience with MapTool for 4e, and I'm always happy to help out with questions. I keep them outside of MapTool, usually in a Word document. For overland maps, parchments, pictures of NPCs, etc., I simply drag the picture to the MapTool map window...

5th Edition and the Female Demographic

For what it's worth, I game regularly in-person with four different women (a fifth has just joined one group) and online with two. Three of the in-person women are pure butt-kickers. They want to fight monsters and take their stuff. Role playing bores the heck out of them, and they wait...

Pixie in heavy armor: Penalty to fly speed?

Okay, well I guess we're back to my original intuition - pixie in heavy armor = fly speed reduced to 5. Sounds like maybe that IS RAW after all. Beats me. I know that's how I'm playing it at my table.

Pixie in heavy armor: Penalty to fly speed?

This is all true. But none of it has anything to do with the question of whether heavy armor changes that fly speed. Technically speaking, it doesn't - "speed" as a character trait is defined in the glossary as walking speed. Taking the walk action while flying uses the fly speed - which is...

Pixie in heavy armor: Penalty to fly speed?

Actually, this question has nothing to do with Crazy Wings, the pixie berserker who charges into enemy spaces. This one came up because one of my Friday night players rolled up a pixie bard. She wears chainmail because, well, that's what bards usually do. Shrug. That said, I do think the pixie...

Pixie in heavy armor: Penalty to fly speed?

Thank you, mcmillan - you're absolutely right. So, by RAW the speed penalty from wearing heavy armor ONLY applies to walking (and running by extension). It does NOT apply to flying or burrowing (if there's ever a PC with a burrow speed). Thus, we have the answer. The Character Builder is...

Pixie in heavy armor: Penalty to fly speed?

That's a fair point in determining a house rule. In the case of the pixie, the rules specifically say "You cannot use this fly speed if you are carrying more than a normal load." That implies that, even if it's magical flight, it's somewhat limited by physical reality (ignoring for a moment...

Pixie in heavy armor: Penalty to fly speed?

Thanks for the confirmation that I'm not nuts! Like I said, I think it's just an oversight in the Character Builder, or possibly a technicality in the rules that everyone should house-rule away.

Pixie in heavy armor: Penalty to fly speed?

I think this is an area where the Character Builder is a little bit off, but I wanted to see what other people think. If you build a pixie character, it normally has a speed of 4 and a fly speed of 6. If you put it in heavy armor like chainmail, the armor has a -1 penalty to speed. The...

Still no Gardmore Abbey map/art galleries

Only as often as WotC puts out material in DDI that you find to be worth $10. If the accumulation of material since the last time you had an active subscription exceeds $10 worth of value to you, you subscribe and download it. If it doesn't, you wait until it does. The art and maps ARE...

    D&D 4E Looking Ahead: What's Next for 4E?

They've been doing occasional Unearthed Arcana articles in Dungeon via D&D Insider, much along these lines. I doubt if they'd print this sort of thing in a book without making it "official".
