Does 4e limit the scope of campaigns?

Its worth pointing out then that the Jack of All Trades feat in 4e lets you effectively replicate the "spend a few points in lots of skills" position.

Does 4e limit the scope of campaigns?

    Can you explain how?

    Roles - do they work?

I agree, just straight fighter is a good fit here for your duelist. Picking carefully theres a good deal of single target powers that significantly hamper whoever they hit. Theres also a good selection of movement powers that let you get to and stick to your chosen target. While the damage...

    PC names in your party

Alara - Eladrin Rogue Arnoff - Dwarf Paladin Conrad - Human Wizard Purity - Tiefling Paladin Just - Tiefling Warlord Yes, we like the Tiefling words-as-names thing, why do you ask? :)

Do Leaders act as Force Multipliers?

I think its fair to say that the *first* leader to join a party acts as a force mulitplier - this is probably clearest with a tactical warlord in a melee heavy party. Additional leaders act closer to force adders.

Forked Thread: Healing Surges: Let's see them in Action!

Hmm, possibly the Farseer books by Robin Hobb - Fitzchivalry gets several severe beatings that take weeks+ to get over, including getting shot at one point that leaves him with a permanent (though minor) disability. Though to be fair, no edition of D&D would handle this as written.

    Wizards, nerfed or not?

Not sure I'd agree here - in AM and Mage everyone is a wizard, but its broken up into various Traditions/whatnot. These in turn are fairly strongly themed, not to the extent of being classes, but don't really allow/support the flexibility that the D&D generalist wizard did.

The end of all edition wars?

I give you oWoD to nWoD. Or even just Mage to rMage. I do agree that the larger the shift, the bigger the arguements though - some of the Mage flamewars still rumble on today. That said, there does seem to be some disagreement over how large the shift was. Someone using the ToB, ToM and...

    LARPing

The funny thing is that Curious Pastimes, decended as it is from the Lorien Trust system, is considered one of the more arcane fest rulesets. Maelstrom is admittedly more arcane between games, but rather simpler in play - plus due to the style of game its not unknown for players to go an entire...

    LARPing

I'm involved in crewing one of the UK's largest larps with ~1000 people at each event. People do have character sheets (although in our case, they are held in a central computer database) but they are very much simpler than most tabletop sheets. Given that all (well, most but we do aim for...

Forked Thread: Love the Game vs. Hate the Greedy Characters

I do agree that the concept of "wealth-by-level" is a very unfortunate one, leading to the kinds of difficulties people have already outlined. The issue is again, one already stated, that D&D characters have traditionally advanced along lines of both wealth and gear. Given the claims that...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

Leaving aside that heroes overcome their opposition so often in fiction because their victory is a matter of author fiat rather than any contact with the odds, you do touch on the point about why people would take the +1 sword over the wand of wonder. If a course of action is proving...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

However, in the context of the game, fortune does not favour the bold. You can be as bold as you like and it won't make your dice roll higher. You can make the game favour the bold through fiat or by inbuilt bonusses if you like, but these can be looked at statistically. Here, I think we are...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

Because different people like different kinds of fantastical elements? Pan's Labyrinth is one kind of fantasy, The Wizard of Oz is a different one, Lord of the Rings would be a third. Elements that make sense in one are out of place in another. In this edition the fantastical elements are...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

Its not neccesarily a player issue though, it can equally be a character one. If I'm playing Wacky McNutjob then I'll love to get a Rod of Wonder. If I'm playing Sgt Grimm, then I'm going to dump that unreliable junk as fast as possible and go for the +1 thats going to help me live through the...

    Tweaking monsters

Well, BAB, HD and whatever being by role/class rather than type is more consistent with PC advancement rather than less. A good example of the disconnect as it stands is the Commoner NPC class - why don't Commoners just advance according to their Humanoid hit dice?

4e "getting back to D&D's roots" how?

I think we are getting a little off topic here, but if all the power does is knock you prone, it doesn't matter where it's done - top of a cliff, flat room, whatever. You just go down in your current square. If the effect is a push, then it does matter where you do it - either you go flying...

4e "getting back to D&D's roots" how?

Do you have a better example? The one you quoted doesn't work. If the power knocks you prone you don't move from your square unless it also does a push, pull or slide, as such you don't get a save due to being in a precarious position because it's not actually pushing you into the pit. If...

4e "getting back to D&D's roots" how?

Consider it not a physical shove, but pressuring the target in such a way as they are forced to give ground? That seems consistent with your interpretation of HP - its not the bite of the blade thats made them move, but the *threat* of that bite.
