    Invisible Paladin

I agree that "intent" is probably too problematic to be used as a decision here - For this I think that the best definition of an attack including the paladin is whether or not you roll against his defenses - A similar case would be where you use an AoE of some type - you do not target the...

    Platemail sold here for CHEAP!!

The cyclic empires conceit of the PoL does actually provide a reason for cheap, easily available arms. If there's lots of fighting going on, there are lots of battlefields to scavenge. Your 50gp plate bought at a point of light is probably not new, rather a scavenged suit from some old battle...

I'm not sure, I'm pretty sure we'll see this instead.

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

I can see where people who don't think this is "real" multiclassing are coming from, particularly in reference to older editions. Comparing 3e to 4e multiclassing, in 3e when taking a level of the new class, you got their Hit Dice, weapon and armour proficiencies, BAB, saves, skills, skill...

    WotC_Dave: Color Power!

The snark is cute, but if you think about it, yes. The global cooldown is referred to as a "round".

    Alright already!!!

Playing a trip/disarm focused fighter a couple of years back I got quite familiar with the ins and outs of it. It became very clear that the effectiveness of the abilities depended very strongly on the enemies you were facing. Against medium sized weapon using humanoids (large if you go...

    Kobold Skirmisher

I can't seem to find it now, which is irritating. I'm pretty sure it was in one of the DDXP player blogs though. Given that it seems that all other healing mechanisms require you to spend surges and the amount given back is identical to that returned by a surge (1/4) it seems logical...

    Kobold Skirmisher

That's already addressed in the way the dying rules work - it turns out that the "recover 1/4 of your hit points" part was the 3e translation of "able to trigger a healing surge". It still costs you a resource to get the healing and you can freely spend those surges out of combat anyway, so I...

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

^ agree. In addition, there have always been aspects of D&D which have required this sort of code-speak. Enhancement bonuses to magic items being the most obvious.

    Ampersand: Sneak Attack

One other factor in more predictable hitpoints is that it also ensures that you can ensure you actually get to play the character you want to. For example, what if you and another player wanted to play a pair of brothers who were fighters - one wanted to be the tough, physical one while the...

    good PRC's for Paladins?

I found Pious Templar from CD an oddly good addition - while in many ways it is a "prestige paladin" in that it essentially gives paladin-like powers to another class it does offer the awesome Mettle ability at 1st level. This plus a Ring of Evasion and the paladin's beefy saves gave me almost...

    Improving the Quarterstaff

How about using the Spiked Chain mechanics with this principle? They seem to give most of what you are looking for from your OP. While true, the real costs for weapons (masterwork or magical) are flat costs, beyond level one (or chargen even) the costs of mundane weaponry become minor...

D&D 4E 4E Halflings unrecognizable from Tolkien hobbits

Just to pick this up - the shire hobbits did not trust boats and so on, but that's not true for all hobbits. One could argue that there is some influence from Smeagol/Deagol's tribe of hobbits on the 4e ones. It's weak, but not totally without precedence.

Do there seem to be a lot of criticals?

We don't know how many rounds each combat is going on for - it's entirely possible that the encounters are running for longer than we expect in 3.5 and so the total number of attack rolls (and hence critical chances) is increased.

D&D 4E Realistic Strength and Carrying Capacity for 4E

True, but an important part of wearing mail is a good strong belt - it can put a decent amount of the weight on your hips.

Can you define the role of the Balor?

I may well be wrong, but I was under the impression that monsters were not divided into roles as such, rather that monsters would be represented as kind of templates which could be layered over the basic framework provided by the role. As such, you could have a Balor Brute, a Balor Skirmisher...

    D&D 4E The WotC designers will be bashing 4e once 5e is announced . . .

Just to nitpick a little, but they did release this conversion document (for the hard-covers at least) - it is (or was) available on the wizards website. For free even. All the changes were also in the SRD, also released for free.

The fighter and the paladin pretty well ganged up on the knight & stole his stuff

Sunderstone, I'm interested in why you think that the information released so far indicates that the game will become more like an MMO and how the rules will force the DM to run it like it is one. As I see it, the massive advantage that a tabletop game has over an MMO or any other CRPG is...

    Why is it so important?

It allows for easier balancing of encounters and pacing of adventures. With per-encounter balancing you have a good idea ahead of time what the capabilities of a party will be at any point in the future. You can have the numbers of encounters per day dictated by the requirements of the game's...

The fighter and the paladin pretty well ganged up on the knight & stole his stuff

We can. And it's a role that the Fighter equivilent has always tried to do. In every edition you have tried to protect the softer targets by interposing yourself - the Knight just allows a mechanical method for doing so. Ultimately, why do you think "Tank" is a role in MMOs? Fighting...
