Mainstream News Discovers D&D's Species Terminology Change

See, with extreme caution, the Polynesian orcs of X8 Drums on Fire Mountain. (Which has some fabulous locations, maps, and encounters! But is… eesh. I’ve been meaning to see if I can reframe it as an undead thing? Or maybe a mad scientist/clockwork/insect thing? Something far, far away from its...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

I was not complaining; I like the change and pointed out reasons I like the change.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

I dunno; I agree it could be ‘change for change’s sake’, but while it does go against established lore, I see some opportunities in it. First, it creates a clearer narrative distinction between monster humanoid species. It’s good to have something to strongly distinguish goblins from kobolds...

    Magazines Dragon Reflections #86

I believe the largest set of paper buildings was in 1989’s Forgotten Realms Cities of Mystery. There were also some with a couple hybrid “AC” Basic D&D products, IIRC. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/16815/fr8-cities-of-mystery-2e

    Magazines Dragon Reflections #86

The castle was tiny but mighty! IIRC, the towers were about 1” tall. Even 10-15mm minis would be giants. I loved that little castle.

Spoilers TV Shows with Great Endings

Blackadder did not die in his third series finale! He was promoted. The (other) difference I meant re: the Forth finale is that it was a poignant ending which spoke to the larger experience of the actual victims of WWI. The previous Blackadders' deaths had been personal, and more purely comic.

Spoilers TV Shows with Great Endings

The classic British sitcoms which made it to the U.S. in the 70's/80's had a pretty high rate of good endings. Black Adder did it especially well. I wonder if they had not come up with that ending, might they have written another season at some point? I'd also praise Fawlty Towers and The...

Not All Christmas Music Is Terrible (Your Music Links)

We’re about to attend Minnesota’s greatest Christmas gift of all, The 17th annual New Standards Holiday Show: The New Standards Holiday Show (2014 PBS broadcast) I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s a jazzy post-punk big band extravaganza. And they made a great Christmas album:

Lulu 30% off Black Friday Code, what are must haves?

I really like my DTRPG reprint of Cook’s BX Expert: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/110792/d-d-expert-set-rulebook-b-x-ed-basic I don’t get why they haven’t done the same for Moldvay’s Basic.

Lulu 30% off Black Friday Code, what are must haves?

Thast’s a good idea, darjr! It also has me thinking: Perhaps I might get my OSE (re-)printed at 8.5x11? Those little books give me eye strain.

D&D 5E (2014) Dungeon Denizens by Goodman Games

I really enjoy Kobold’s monster books - I find their entries inspiring, and I especially like how they integrate with their sourcebooks/adventure books. Especially Tales of the Old Margreve. So a Kobold book is an easier sell for me. I’m pledged for the Goodman monster book, 5e version, but I’m...

Kickstarter's 'U' Shaped Curve Is A Reverse 'J' And More Pronounced Than You Thought!

Thanks for sharing! This pattern makes sense to me, given your long KS publishing track record. Most of the pledges I make are to people I've bought from before: you, Sly Flourish, Goodman, Kobold, Necrotic Gnome, Rod Waibel, Free League, etc. And I usually pledge (or not) on these on Day 1...

D&D General Why Were the Dragon and Dungeon Magazines Discontinued?

I would still be subscribing to a 5e version of Dragon and Dungeon. Especially Dungeon. The 3e version was awesome. Even the 4e version was good a lot of the time - though hard to read casually before I had a satisfactory iPad.

    Eric Noah's 3rd Edition Website

I was checking Eric Noah’s page multiple times daily in the pre-3e era. We were really tired of 2e, and the simplicity of 3e’s core sounded very exciting! I faithfully compiled Eric’s playtest/preview leaks into an ever-evolving document, and added in the “Start Playing 3e Now” bits from Dragon...
