Worlds of Design: The Problem with Magimarts

I hate magic marts. To me, the point of the game is to adventure. 5E already has a terrible economy - eventually players have so much gold that it's almost absurd. Shopping is boring - adventuring is not. IF I have any kind of Best Buy in a town, it's a shop with like three bespoke items...

D&D 5E (2024) Where are the real previews?

They've been talkin' up that DMG a lot, but have been very sparse on details. If the "Bastion" system is the best they've got, I'm not gonna hold my breath. I'm assuming we won't get an MM playtest as I imagine it'll use the same theory behind Monsters of the Multiverse (but I hope I'm proven...

D&D General Exploration How I Do It

I just do the 5-room dungeon, but outdoors. Sort of. Basically, a linked set of encounters that can be adjusted with Random Encounter rolls. I still spend hours making a hex map with forests and rivers and mountains, but honestly - that's just for me, because my players don't care (outside of...

D&D 5E (2014) What are you looking forward to more Vecna: Eve of Ruin or Quests from the Infinite Staircase

I much prefer anthology adventures, as I don't believe the current WOTC team is capable of creating long-form adventures (worth the price they ask for), least of which a high-level long-form adventure.

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

Sure, but my experience (and that’s all I can reference) is that the big, long, interconnected adventure is what gets my players excited.

D&D General Matt Colville on adventure length

I - as a forever DM - agree with Matt, but I've found that with my players, they generally want an Epic. Both groups have lamented shorter campaigns and adventures. My preference would be a 10-session mini campaign with a direct goal. Then we can move on to a new story, new setting, etc. My...

D&D 5E (2024) How excited are you for the new 2024 edition d&d?

If it's 5E, no. If it still relies heavily on spellcasting, Long Rests, magic items, picking between ASIs or Feats, HP bloat, and CR - no.

D&D 5E (2024) How excited are you for the new 2024 edition d&d?

I put 2. Generally, I'm over 5E. It had a good run, but the cracks are showing, and from I've seen, 5.5 isn't going to fix the foundational issues (and to be honest - it can't, because most of my problems are structural). I am "excited" about some balancing. To me, spells across the board...

D&D General Does anyone else title their D&D sessions?

I title mine, but only really for myself (my players don’t know). It’s an organizational thing; I have my Obsidian setup where it generates a table with the synopsis of each session. It helps me see all the sessions at a glance, and gives me more info than “Session 11”.

When, How and What Do You Play?

I have two groups that meet weekly: a casual group that meets Monday nights. We start at 6:30 and end around 9:30 a "less casual" (not necessarily hardcore, but closer) group that meets Friday nights. We start at 7:00, and typically play until 11:30 Both groups are playing D&D at the moment...

When, How and What Do You Play?

1,000% agree. I have never had a successful group that met bi-weekly. Each one flounders as people forget about it, it's not a priority, etc. One of my groups started out playing every other Sunday. The amount of times we had to cancel was astronomical - which meant we basically never played...

RPG Evolution: The AI DM in Action

God this is so true. I use AI in my day-to-day life (both in work and in play), but as it currently stands, the best use case is to have the robot throw a bunch of nonsense at the wall, from which you can kickstart your own imagination. You can get better responses through prompt engineering...

    Anyone played Masks of Nyarlathotep?

Currently running it - I think 90% of the complaints in this thread could be solved by using the optional Pulp rules. Just double your PC's health and you are good to go. I'm loving it. Playing with 5 people, throwing in one-shots where I can (the players went on a trip to a museum, where I...

D&D 5E (2014) Question on Mass Combat Comparison

No, but that doesn't mean you couldn't add that. I originally meant to keep it pretty abstracted - the Assets that the players pick up are simply "wins" they've gathered over the course of the campaign. So, for my upcoming Mass Battle, I'm tracking the following Allied Assets: Tor Sethai Dwarf...

D&D 5E (2014) Question on Mass Combat Comparison

If you aren’t interested in switching systems, I don’t have much to offer. I can say that I was wholly unimpressed with WOTC’s attempt (and judging by the fact that it never made it to print, I imagine they weren’t happy either). I created my own homebrew system that mixes player interaction...

    Drawing fantasy maps

I use Wonderdraft, and using the Trace tool, I outright steal and kitbash maps together. My campaign’s world map is most of Pathfinder’s Golarion, with a fantasy Britain I found online. I used to spend HOURS trying to create the perfect map, and then I considered paying a cartographer to...

From Bespoke to Universal: Let's Talk About TTRPG Systems and Themes

I think I've found myself to be in the minority, in that I prefer "universal" systems to "bespoke" ones. Generally, I find that bespoke systems come with the assumption of a very specific narrative and/or worldbuilding. I prefer to create my own worlds, universes, settings, etc., which means...

D&D General Which Gods/Pantheons do you use in your D&D setting?

I use a mixture of Faerun, Pathfinder, and homebrew gods. Basically, there's an event in my world called "the Godfall"; my version of Vecna never wanted to become a god - instead, he witnessed the devastating impact of the Divine Scourge (a holy war between the Upper Planes and the Nine Hells...

    Should Magic Spells/Powers be Interruptible?

Just like in earlier editions (if I remember correctly), spells with a range of Touch would ignore this ruling. Otherwise - gotta play smart! Positioning is important!

    Should Magic Spells/Powers be Interruptible?

Great point, but I think it's fairly simple: don't be in melee range. Counterspell, the 3rd level spell slot, allows you to be within 60 feet. The proposed martial-counter spell would be significantly reduced to 5-feet. I would imagine it would also simply require a concentration check...
