D&D 5E (2024) What is your oppinion of 5.24 so far?

If I buy 5.5, it'll be on a deep sale. I'm just not interested in paying full price for a half-edition.

D&D General Richard Whitters poll on twitter, "Will you be buying the newest edition of D&D?"

It's funny you bring up Call of Cthulhu, because 7E has some pretty extensive changes to that ruleset (ie, making everything based on a d100 check, rather than splitting some up to various dice mechanics). It's good for gamers when the game is perfect. No game is perfect, which means sticking...

D&D General Richard Whitters poll on twitter, "Will you be buying the newest edition of D&D?"

I've said this before, but imagine being the D&D lead in 2040, and being told, "yeah, so, you're actually not allowed to change anything. We think we really nailed it back in 2014." There will be another edition. It will be when it is the most advantageous for WOTC/the brand to do it, but the...

D&D General Richard Whitters poll on twitter, "Will you be buying the newest edition of D&D?"

I also don't really believe this. WOTC absolutely cares if you upgrade. As the years press on, I imagine they will make 2014 rules harder and harder to use. Will the new VTT work with 2014 rules? How long until they phase 2014 out of DnDBeyond for good? How long until, for example, they stop...

D&D General Richard Whitters poll on twitter, "Will you be buying the newest edition of D&D?"

I guess I just disagree entirely. Removing "old fashioned" ideas is fine. That's not really an issue. Obviously there is 'more' than just that, but my issue is: why am I being asked to spend 50+ on conservative changes? Make it $10. Heck, make it $20. Don't charge me for a "new edition", when...

D&D General Richard Whitters poll on twitter, "Will you be buying the newest edition of D&D?"

That's funny, because I have the exact view of minimal edition changes. I'm having a really hard time understanding what the "pitch" is for 5.5, other than: Official errata'ing of broken builds/unintended effects Hasbro has noticed the line go down, and line must go up 5.5, to me, feels...

D&D General Alternate thought - rule of cool is bad for gaming

Something I've talked about my group is, "the rule of cool is for the story, not just the players." Meaning, "rule of cool" doesn't just mean, "hey look this is the way I can bend the rules so my character can do something great or OP or whatever." It can also mean, "oh, that fireball spell...

D&D 5E (2024) What would you like to see in the new Monster Manual (2025)?

Yeah, for me, it was the biggest shock coming from 4E. I remember thinking, "why are monsters so...boring?" when coming over to 5E. I used to love tinkering with monsters and making new ones with 4E. I pretty much avoid it entirely with 5E. That being said, @SlyFlourish's 'Forge of Foes' has...

D&D 5E (2024) What would you like to see in the new Monster Manual (2025)?

If you haven't gotten the chance, check out 4th Edition's monsters. For all that edition's problems (real and imagined), it absolutely nailed the monsters.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024+ Monster Statblock options

That's true, but easily remedied by giving them a +2 bonus, or a +4 bonus, etc etc. 5E statblocks have always required tinkering (I wish they didn't, but still). I like the card initiative; reminiscent of Savage Worlds, which I think does initiative very well. My personal favorite, though...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024+ Monster Statblock options

I prefer the new statblock to the 2014 one for sure, but there's still so much I would change. That being said, I love the passive initiative. I absolutely hate d20 initiative systems, so passive initiative feels like a much-needed quality-of-life change.

D&D 5E (2024) What would you like to see in the new Monster Manual (2025)?

Is there a reason why they shouldn't be? Other than slight differences? How often is the mod going to come up vs the save? Realistically, how often is a monster doing a skill check, and even aside from that, how often should the monster's ability be demonstrably different than the save? It...

    D&D 5E (2024) Let's call it 5.24

My group(s) call it 5.5. It's just simpler. The real test is going to be what folks call it a year from now. That'll be what sticks.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #2: "New Fighter"

Same. Currently have a barbarian using one, and all it really seems to do is slow down the game without a meaningful effect. I'm considering ripping it out and just giving his weapon spells or 4E-like powers.

    D&D 5E (2024) The 2014 vs 2024 PHB Compatibility Thread

I'm sure right now the answer is, "yes of course!", but just wait about a year after release and then it'll be, "well actually, no."

    D&D General The nitty gritty

Time and rest only. Past level 5 (honestly past level 3), hardly any of that other stuff matters. Spells solve almost all of those problems.

D&D General (SPOILERS for Vecna: Eve of Ruin) Are My Standards Too High for Adventures?

WOTC just can't make good adventures. I don't want to think it's their writers, but rather their process. Also, if they're going to call themselves "The World's Greatest Roleplaying Game", shouldn't they also have the best adventures? If you google "best TTRPG adventures", you're likely going...

    Diplomacy; The board game. (+)

I played a game of Diplomacy with my coworkers back in 2018. The game was one turn per day. The assumption was that it would be a nice quick game to play at lunch. It turned the entire office into Game of Thrones. The amount of lies, backstabbing, secret alliances, and staring at a map was...

D&D 5E (2024) Which section of the 2024 PHB will you check out first?

I have no plans on buying 2024 5E, but if they take a giant nerf-bat to spells, I could be persuaded. I don't see that happening, though.

D&D 5E (2014) What Do You Not Like About The 2014 5E DMG?

Yeah, I just think the system is fighting you every step of the way here. Sure, I can do no-magic games by removing over 50% of the system by just using martial classes too, but that's addition by subtraction. I don't see that as a "plus"; it's a homebrew. Like Monopoly can just be a...
