    D&D 5E (2014) Making Monsters

I think the 5E DMG rules are a bit nuts, particularly on the upper end. Even actual 5E monsters don't follow them. I'd definitely lean on the A5E rules more. I don't have the TOTV Monster Vault so I can't comment on how those are.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

I tend to think of Yugoloths as the ruthless capitalists of the underworld. They only care about the Blood War in so much as they can profit from it.

that ship sailed long before DnD was a twinkle in the eye of Dave.

Astarion Makes Another Cameo Appearance in 2025 Monster Manual

Maybe he's just busy or doesn't like D&D as much. Neil Newbon is a fan from days of yore and nerded out when Mark Hulmes used Drizzt. in a AP.

    D&D 5E (2024) Hobgoblin warriors

Lol I wrote that message hours ago, realized you had and didn't post it, then posted it by accident just now because the forum saves drafts.

Wot? that is the exact opposite change they made to all the other cases!

    D&D 5E (2024) Hobgoblin warriors

The poison damage on the bow is a bit much but (crits are going to kill characters) but it's otherwise pretty much the same as the 2014 version: 18 AC, 11 HP, 13 average melee damage.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

Reorganizing the DMG only to make the Monster Manual a mess. Like I don't even disagree with some of the choices, like putting Gelatinous Cube in G and the Werebeasts in W, but Yugoloths are one of those monsters that you're probably not going to use unless you first know what the heck a...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Yugoloth?

The difference between a fiend and an evil aberration is that a fiend is doing what it does because what it does is evil. Evil is its nature, whether lawful, chaotic, or neutral. Aberrations do evil things for reasons that are either alien to human thought or divorced from our notions of...

Gygax will never live that down. Mostly because he's dead, but even if he weren't. :hmm:

I feel like the Monster Manual needed its own version of the Lore Glossary.

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

Normally I agree but in this case your character is not dead but held hostage by the DM and the player is forced to sit on their hands until the character is uncursed or replaced.

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

I'm not actually opposed the curse kicking in as soon as you drop to 0, but the part where you're under the DMs control. It's especially odd on a Werebear which is typically neutral good.

    D&D 5E (2024) I have a Monster Manual. AMA!

There's actually a pretty good justification for many of the changes in today's fiend video--certainly the best one I've seen thus far from Crawford: a creature type gives you a quick indicator on the function and purpose of the monster. Kuo-toans as abberations lets you know they're eldritch...

    D&D 5E (2024) Lycanthropes in the MM

Not a fan of how the new rules for the curse. There seem to be a frustrating number of effects in the 2025 Monster Manual where dropping a creature to 0 hit points is instantly fatal or otherwise removes them from play, like the Mind Flayer Arcanist's 120 foot brain consumption. Having so many...

It's all Greek to me. I mean fair enough, but you understand many of us feel the same way about the lore changes 5.24 is making with creature types.
