How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Aboleth

Still not as bad as I thought when I forgot to factor in the LAs.

    D&D 5E (2024) I have a Monster Manual. AMA!

I dunno, changing the whole story bothers me a lot more than things that could just be explained as misinterpretations or new developments. There's no way to reconcile the backstory of Descent into Avernus with previous lore other to say that Zariel fell millions of years ago, ascended and...

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Aboleth

Interesting that the TOTV aboleth doesn't have any ability to enthrall. Edit: Never mind I missed that it's part of the disease.

As much as I find some of the choices WRT to humanoids disappointing the art remands on point.

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Aboleth

It's only been reduced by 2. It was already pretty low in 2014 (12 times 3 attacks; now it's 12 times 2 and a save for 10 psychic.) Both are a far cry from the 63-68 damage recommended for a CR 10.

    D&D 5E (2024) I have a Monster Manual. AMA!

I mean D&D has been retconning its past since the 70s. Just look at the history of the Nine Hells. Zariel was supposed to be the first ruler of Avernus and now she's only been a devil for a couple centuries.

Honestly if I were going to stat Gruumsh I'd have him be a giant with the (deity) tag.

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Aboleth

The multiattack damage seems pretty anemic for a CR 10 creature.

    D&D 5E (2024) Deities?

The only list of gods in the 2024 books is the Greyhawk deities in the DMG. It seems that deities are going to be relegated to setting books going forward.

    Huh?

D&D General Differences Between Limbo And The Far Realm?

Just a clarification, the Far Realm predates Eberron and Xoriat by nearly a decade. It first appeared in the 1996 adventure "Gates of Firestorm Peak"

Question! What is the damage of the Ancient Black Dragon's Rend?

    D&D General You're In Charge of D&D -- 2025 Edition

Not that I'm remotely qualified to be making such decisions... but first I'd look at market research to guide my hand for one. I don't want to be TSR all over again Ideally what I'd want to do is: 1. Launch a setting overview source book that includes settings like Dark Sun, Mystara, Nentir...

    D&D 5E (2024) I have a Monster Manual. AMA!

So what is a harpy exactly? It's certainly not an ooze. It's not a celestial, dragon, or construct. It could be a fiend or a fey theoretically though that's never been part of their lore. It's too intelligent to a beast, too Medium to be a giant. I suppose it could be an elemental but unlike...

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Aarakocra

Who said the players can't loot it?

Monstrosities are classical monsters (IE the Kraken, griffon, hydra) and stuff altered by magic (owlbears, werewovles, mimics)

I'm guessing not considering they still have non-legacy stat blocs from MPMM.

    D&D 5E (2024) I have a Monster Manual. AMA!

That could be neat. I don't think there's been an actual elemental realms source book since 4E's The Plane Below from over 15 years ago.

    D&D 5E (2024) I have a Monster Manual. AMA!

That's what I was thinking when I saw the conversion chart honsestly. I didn't know how much HP the Tough had (still don't know the exact number) but I used the 5e Thug a lot so I know it has 32 average HP compared to the average 15 the standard Orc had. More than doubling the base HP of Orc...
