D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

It's hard to justify that in the face of the fact that you're asking people to give up, completely, the idea of family, love, and sex, forever, to feed your entirely unfounded view of morality. Wait... you haven't had characters with a lover in every port? Any heroes who follow up successful...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Eh, I was just spinning mental wheels last post. A small mental exercise... "If I wanted to not make a decision about my character's race/sex/orientation/whatever, how would I do that?"

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Assuming that the audience is dead, those things can be left out, but they have to actively be left out, and the audience will almost always bring their assumptions to it and apply them to the work. The Harry Potter books never define Hermione Granger's ethnicity, but the vast bulk of the...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

A pile of people see straight, white, cisgender, male, and either Christian or vaguely agnostic as a default lack-of-choice and any deviation from that as being a choice. Pointing out that this is not the case, frequently, is really important if we ever want to see the lack of diversity in genre...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Wait. Rather than read the whole thread, you intend to drag someone into reposting things that others have already said? Really? Do you see just how ridiculous this is? And that the presence of this line, in and of itself, makes clear the exact game of wording and misdirection the entire rest...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Actually, I don't really care about whether people are guilty or not, and I don't really care about winning. Making things right is what matters.

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

If you live in the West and are white, you live on the stolen inheritance - through slavery and colonialism - of others. Period. Your ancestors took the labor, land, and resources of people from all over the world and you have inherited it. Yes, people of all races have done evil. People of all...

The point is somewhere a few miles to your left. You have missed it. Allow me to play the role of navigator. Mass colonialism, destruction of local cultures and populations across all continents, intercontinental intergenerational chattel slavery, continent-scale acts of genocide, and stealing...

A more relevant question... "When was the last time someone was beaten to death at a time - or while leaving a time - when being beaten to death would seem very non-sequitor?" Because that happens with some frequency.

Ah! Oops. Missed context. I can dig it.

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

It absolutely does say something negative - it says that the gay man's relationship or marriage is not a marriage, can never be a marriage, should never be a marriage. It calls his love and his family inferior to those of the t-shirt's wearer, inferior to those of all the other straight people...

I'd have an easier time expecting the best if AL hadn't already trained me to expect them to instead go in the most restrictive direction possible, regardless of how much or how little sense it makes.

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Okay, I'll give you your general rule. In the country in which the event is happening: 1. Has the group being spoken negatively of in the shirt been considered property under the law? Don't wear the shirt. 2. Has the group being spoken negatively of in the shirt had to fight for access to the...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Yeah. This is kind of a thing at the moment - the anti-gay movement behaving as though they are the persecuted minority and LGBT folks the persecuting masses. It's not true, of course - gay mobs aren't beating and killing Christians, in much the same way that transgender women aren't harassing...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Others have responded to you on this at least as well as I can, so I'll leave their responses and move forward. Thank you. Everyone who says homosexuality is wrong is acting out of hate, out of discrimination, out of a desire to treat certain people's lives and loves and existence as worth...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

That the blurb might turn off a few bigots IS a selling point - neither my game nor the hobby as a whole need homophobes, misogynists, racists, or transmisogynists - and any GM who uses Rule Zero to ban bisexual characters is raising a huge neon sign over their table that says, "I am a terrible...

New SCAG Info: Someone Got The Book

The thing is, the Storm Sorc's subclass features are awesome. The Favored Soul's, by and large, aren't. Apart from bonus spells, the only really good subclass feature comes in during the Paragon tier.

    D&D 5E (2014) Increasing spell power

I don't think I've yet had a 5e fight - including really rough ones that dropped 2 or more PCs to 0 HP and killed at least one outright - break 5 rounds in length. And if you pick your target well - if you hit low saves - Hold Person has a greater than even chance to incapacitate a fairly...

    D&D 5E (2014) Increasing spell power

Hold Person is a great spell as-is! It's one of level 2's better spells - a removal for at least a round (because the creature saves at the end of its turn, they've lost at least one turn regardless) that also vastly increases party damage output against the target. In a game where combat runs...

New SCAG Info: Someone Got The Book

Yeah. My biggest issue with the Sorc is that, in the PHB, it basically ended up with one usable subclass. The Wild Mage looks kind of fun to play, but reliability beats randomness basically every time in D&D - especially when "randomness" can easily mean "accidentally wiped the party in a single...
