D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

That system worked very well for casters in 4e, and it works very well in 13a. Admittedly, both those games draw a hard line between combat spells and utility spells that 5e will never have (and shouldn't). Even so, what I'm suggesting not only can be done but has been done, and many of us miss...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Someone in the other thread pointed out that the Champion subclass in the playtest has an ability that can be used, quote, "once per combat". HEY WOTC! If you're letting the "combat power" cat out of the bag, that is how you re-do the warlock right there.

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

I like the weapon abilities a lot. Some bits I'm wary of -- for example, Vex seems incredibly strong -- but overall this is a nice buff to martials, both in power and flavor. Big thumbs up. I especially love the fact that fighters get sort of super-mastery. Makes fighters even more distinct...

D&D 5E (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

In fairness, the short rest mechanic for warlocks was simply awful. Depending on how many short rests your party could get, warlocks were usually either too strong or too weak. I'd rather see them just give warlocks encounter powers, a la 4e. They could do that if they wanted - just say you...

Shadowdark How would you make a gnome?

I'm debating whether polymorphing into small animals sounds gnomish or not. Maybe? It's a very good ability, in any case. Worth noting, however, that all the basic game races have an ability that boosts them in combat, which this doesn't.

    D&D 5E (2014) When Did 5E Peak Quality Wise?

As Frank said: The best is yet to come. (I hope.)

    Shadowdark Let's make Shadowdark classes!

I'll wager the bard can give out a luck token or two.

D&D General What flavor of D&D has the fastest combat?

Ooh! I just bought this. Thanks for the tip, and enjoy your 100 cents. :)

D&D General What flavor of D&D has the fastest combat?

Thanks for all the replies. Not surprised that everyone is saying Basic. I remember my games back then going very quickly, but then again, we were 14. Follow up question: any preferences among the various OSR games on this front? Is Shadowdark (for example) faster/slower/same as Basic?

D&D General What flavor of D&D has the fastest combat?

My least favorite thing about D&D is waiting half an hour for my turn to come around in combat. So which flavor/branch of D&D has the quickest combat, in your experience? I assume it's some varierty of OSR, but please enlighten me.

Bundles, Freebies, and Charity Sales News for April 23, 2023

I bought the 13th Age bundle and I can vouch that it's a crazy good deal. 13A is playtesting a 2nd edition, but all the books in the bundle except the core rulebook should be good once 2e releases.

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

My character dropped dead without taking a single point of damage. He died of fear! So sad. Fortunately, the rest of the party revived him. But still, kind of embarrassing, right?

Shadowdark How would you make a gnome?

I really want them to be able to turn invisible, which I bet you'd agree is gnome-like. But again, that's taken.

Shadowdark How would you make a gnome?

That's pretty good! How about Misty Step, once per day, regardless of class? If that's too strong (since it's a second tier spell) maybe it can only be used reactively: "When an enemy targets you with an attack or a spell, you may instantly teleport to a near area you can see."

Shadowdark How would you make a gnome?

+1 spellchecks would be good, but the elf already has that. Invisibility once a day would also be great, but the halfling has that. Hm. How about once a day, reroll a failed wizard spell check or theivery check? That sort of limits gnomes to their traditional stereotypical classes, but...
