WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Yeah, I played that. It was on Gamepass I think and it was pretty great! Big time Turtles in Times vibe.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I mean, I guess. I would probably just have them working together and have the lawful evil organized ones operate differently than the chaotic ones. Sort of like the difference between Beebop and Rocksteady vs Foot Clan ninjas. Like they are different but working towards the same goal and just...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Not really germane to the article, but I always found the whole Blood War conflict between, a like, really arbitrary distinction? Like they don't have more in common than they don't?

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

To a degree that's true. But it still was the huge gorilla in the room before that. I remember game stores being chock full of AD&D 2E stuff in like, 97,98 and 99. And that was when TSR wasn't publishing much of anything.

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

I'm one of those who detests the idea of Anime Fighting Magic fighters, but as you level and fight more and more powerful foes, that just breaks down. They can't simultaneously be just a built dude with a sword and doing huge chunks of damage to an elder dragon at the same time. At the end of...

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

Yeah, their ultimate goal will be achieved anyway by just getting a critical mass of players on DDB. That's a marketplace they completely control, and if they can get those users to not be interested in anything that doesn't offer DDB integration then their goals are achieved regardless. That's...

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

For example, to use the Tal'Dorei book from that show you like, you would need to own the core rules for 5E. I can use the Tales of the Valiant monster book with 5E. The idea is you can remove the expense for supporting the game, for segments you don't fee like making or think aren't worth it...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

If that turns out to be true, and I certainly think it could be, what's ultimately going to change? Even at the very height of the boom, outside of a handful of super huge Kickstarters, the old adage of "The best way to make hundreds of Dollars in the RPG business is to start with thousands "...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Hey now, after they changed those names all those angry moms were just fine with D&D, right?

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Oh yeah? Bub, I'm wearing leather pants, resolving all conflicts with tic-tac-toe and listening to KMFDM right now, and I'm super cool.

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

From a managing public pushback perspective, yes. But then they would have had to make 5.5 radically different so that you couldn't reverse-engineer third party content for it under the still valid OGL that 5.0 was/is under. They also didn't want to kill their "evergreen" golden goose.

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

How dare you peons try and stop me from enshittifying the thing you love. Don't you understand that I gotta have da money. I needa da money.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I don't see much to disagree with here. I'll say on a purely anecdotal level I have found it easier to drum up support to play games that aren't 5E for the last little bit now, which is nice. So whatever that means more broadly I don't know. But hey, I want to play a whole bunch of games so...

WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

This reads to me like Mike is sort of going to bat that the idea of a revised OGL wasn't all bad. Which, especially as a now independent game designer, strikes me as strange for the many, many reasons we discussed at the time. But yeah, while I disagree with the idea that I can stab a giant...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

I'm preparing to run a 4E home game and creating tactically interesting and balanced encounters for every fight from scratch just seems like too much work with everything else I have to do so I just decided to run Scales of War and I'll just add some notes to the stat blocks (because I think...

Dark Tower Gets The Deluxe Director’s Cut Treatment From Goodman Games

The 5E conversions leave me cold. But that's true of all of Goodman's 5e content. I always thought they could carve out a niche in 5e content by infusing some of that Appendix weirdness into it, not as much as in DCC, but still. But no, total normcore stuff. That's why this sort of appeals...

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

Yep, forget about Hold Person working on a CR 1/2 goblin. You're living in dreamland now.

Are Orcs in the Monster Manual? No and Yes.

Agreed this would be much better. Give me a little blurb telling me some common humanoid abilities to overlay right there in the section. This is like, when they said to just use some generic vampire stat block for Strahd. Like dude, I'm paying you to do the work for me.

Pictured, our new AI moderator. Weirdly, very popular in Germany.
