Yeah, agreed. I don't like 13th Age for different reasons, but I do like their abstract engagement ranges. I think the old Middle Earth RPG (the non-5E one) had a similar thing too. Now, I've invested those flat Pathfinder standees with bases for enemies. It's cheap and I can store thousands...
