D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Doesn't the word "wizard" come from the same root as "vizier"? My understanding of the RW role of viziers was that they had enough education and experience to enable them to advise leaders as to possible consequences of different courses of action. They weren't always right, and their...

D&D 5E (2014) Simple Warrior Buff and the importance of Game Balance

Yes. Quick, to-the-point, and it seems reasonable to add to the Champion archetype. It treads a little on the Battlemaster's Maneuvers, but not enough to be a steal.

D&D 5E (2014) Simple Warrior Buff and the importance of Game Balance

Since Dodge (Parry) is generally a reaction to being attacked, it doesn't make a good fit for an Extra Attack action on a PC's turn. Helping another character, though: that I like.

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

So, "maþþumgyfa" might share the origin root for Tolkien's hobbit cultural giving of "mathoms" (if I remember the correct word) on their birthdays? And such a hobbit would then be the maþþumgyfa. Cool!

D&D 5E (2014) How do players know they are in the "wrong" location in a sandbox campaign?

Fanaelialae - (no XP Award option showing; re comment #10 on this thread). Very good suggestions.

D&D 5E (2014) How do players know they are in the "wrong" location in a sandbox campaign?

I really like MerricB's idea of the side-quests (see comment #8 in this thread). It keeps the game moving forward without letting it drop into a TPK, and may also be utilized to provide foreshadowing for when the party is ready for the more dangerous scenarios. Here's a notion that can be used...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

FYI: "Redthistle" is the clan name of my favorite gnome PC (Pathfinder game). He's a rogue/sorcerer, but I could add a level of bard just for your nightmares' sake ... ;) Your comment triggered a memory of a meme making the rounds, might have been back in the 1990s. The idea then was that...

Can I stir the debate, and suggest it be named the Brandegoris College of Bardic Dance? Heh-heh-heh!

Watch a movie combat scene with the sound on mute. Watch the scene again with the soundtrack playing. The difference is bardic influence.

D&D 5E (2014) Waterskins (apparently every adventuring party in history died of thirst)

The ounce is the basic unit of measure (can I call it archaic?) in this system: 1 ounce of water sets the standard for a weight of 1 ounce. There are 128 ounces in a gallon. There are 16 ounces to a pound of weight. 128/16 = 8; therefore, a gallon weighs 8 pounds. I love it that according...

D&D 5E (2014) What do townsfolk know about the Seven Sisters?

"You done good," as Joe Don Baker used to say, in the role of a club-toting lawman on a TV show back in the day, whose name has slipped my aging brain. "Walking Tall" was the name of the show.

    Cleric Winter Domain

I was revisiting threads I hadn't looked at in awhile, and got to thinking about this spell. As I sometimes try to create PCs inspired theme-wise by comic book super-heroes, this spell got me to musing on the X-Men's Ice Man. Ice Shape would need some changes to fit Bobby's ability to move...

D&D 5E (2014) What the warlord needs in 5e and how to make it happen.

My PC does that after an hour or two in the tavern. Then again, he's a forest gnome, so he starts out a bit "d'illusioned".

I'm happy to see this; Brave New World was my favorite of the super hero games.

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

Odd numbers are not a bad thing for a starting character. If you have a pair of them, you can use an ASI level to bump both scores by +1, and "Sha-zam!", two stats just improved their modifiers. If your DM allows feats, a number of those give +1 to a single stat, and some other beneficial...

D&D 5E (2014) Monster Creation rules: Anyone else not find them particularly helpful.

This just gave me a flash-back from decades back while watching a televised film adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot. I hadn't read the novel yet, so I had no idea what was going to happen in the kitchen scene where the nosferatu and the priest confronted each other. All these years later...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tabaxi claw attack

TheCosmicKid and Cap'n Kobold cover most of the RAW, which generally do not allow you to use the tabaxi's claw attack along with your weapon attack. The exception that would allow you to use the claw attack is your reaction, which can be used either on your own turn or on someone else's (PHB...
