    D&D 4E 4E DM's - what have you learned?

Good online tools make character creation and encounter building a breeze. I learnt that with maptools and ventilo you can still have fun gaming with your friends despite having kids and being separated by hundreds of miles.

    Assess the Striker

You're right and I stand corrected re Eldritch strike. Only knew about blast and had to check DDI. I agree with a 1h weapon you can use curse and finesse to get 1d8 (rapier) +cha +1d6 +1d8 with nowhere near the restrictions of a rogue's 1d4 (dagger) + cha +2d6 sly flourish sneak attack...

    Wizard/Mage help...

I'd love the concept of a vryloka necromancer - the taint of undeath and having to hide both your necromancy and your true race behind an facade of nobility.

    Assess the Striker

The executioner's finesse attack bonus can apply to basic attacks and assassin powers only if using assassin weapons. I guess if you can get a character who uses an implement that is also a assassin weapon you can deal both on a MBA. Very clever rules lawyering. I would still argue Eldrich...

    Wizard/Mage help...

As far as I know, wizard spellbooks are vancian in that you pick your powers after a long rest (one for each power level) and only can use those until your next long rest.

    Loot Split

Fenriswolf described very well the idea of roleplaying the sharing of treasure. Some of the great moments from our campaign have come from in character discussions of whether to sell items or keep them, and what to spend party funds on (a magic tapestry with no combat value comes to mind)...

Paragon one-on-one: A slayer versus the world

Maybe let him spend healing surges for a reroll (must keep second result) for a 'surge of effort'. Might help balance out a lack of party/healer support and may make surge management a bit more challenging.

    Assess the Striker

I could be wrong, but I don't know any rule saying that basic attacks can use hybrid striker abilities. I would not consider then class attacks unless they come from that class's power list. Non-hybrids are not specifically restricted, so can use striker abilities on basic attacks. But if anyone...

    Assess the Striker

That is right. I have a hybrid ranger-rogue in my group and they quarry or sneak attack depending on whether they are using ranger or rogue powers. This actually adds a lot of versatility as it allows the 1d6HQ damage when it is too hard to get CA for the 2d6 sneak attack damage.

Victories and No Defeats in D&D

The problem with many pcs (and I have one like this), is that they have a 'fight to the death mentality. The one time I threw a high level enemy way above the party level, one pc (a revenant) fought to -40hp before dying. Two pcs had fled, another KO'd while retreating - the revenant just took...

    Class as playstyle?

This is a great example of why linear fighters quadratic wizards DOESN'T work. After Raistlin hit those high levels he became an npc by necessity of being too powerful. At low levels his value to the party was skills and intelligent insight, things that are often undervalued in a D&D game.

    Assess the Striker

Both characters are clearly not 4e optimized, but I go with the other comments that, if they are having fun, just lower the encounter difficulty. PC concept is more important than combat effectiveness, although if your other pcs are twinked out, that can be a problem. The lvl 5 rogue in my...

D&D Race You Hate the Most

And to clarify, I prefer earlier Tieflings to the look of the 4e uber demonic versions. I find the best pc races tend to look the most 'human'.

How many hits should a 1st level Fighter be able to take?

I think the counter question has to be discussed is that, against the lvl1 Orc, how many hits does it take the lvl1 fighter bring it down? Personally I think the Orc should go down in half the time of the fighter so they can take out 2 Orcs solo with a 80% success rate. The Orcs should be...

    Psionics - core or not?

With all the modules there is a limited amount that 5e can include in the core first release. What so you all think of psionics? They go back to AD&D where you could roll for talents and really got pushed in terms of flavor in 2e dark sun. So they have a long history with D&D. But they are also...

D&D Race You Hate the Most

My number 1 is drow - they are great for a npc enemy, but the 'good drow' has become a sad cliche. I'm sorry, but for me drow are a forbidden pc race and need to be left in an ra salvatore novel where they belong. My number 2 is common to many - dragonborn. While I like other new 3e/4e races...
