"Duelist Prowess" L1 Rogue Daily - now "Weapon" key word ?

The addition of the weapon keyword means you need a weapon to use it and that you can add magical bonuses for damage and critical strikes if you have a magic weapon. This is actually a big buff to the power. The rogue in my game has it and it is great. Note that the strikes are immediate...

    Hybrid Character Questions

I like the idea of hybrids as they counter one of the oft complaints about 4e, which is a lack of ability to make unique and customized characters. The fact they are reduced in overall power compared to non-hybrids is good, else everyone would play them. I see it as a trade off for versatility...

    Immediate Interrupts and AC

Oh well, haven't played MtG since 1997. I feel old.

    Retraining?

I allow retraining, but it is rarely taken up by my players. They tend to do it for powers that seemed cool but in practice they find they never or rarely use. In some cases you can also explain retraining as a more evolved form or specialized form of an existing power (a lightning wizard...

    Immediate Interrupts and AC

No. Interrupts happen first. Just like magic the gathering ;)

    I don't know anything

Great post. I like the Deva race and it adds flavor to any divine character. I had another look at the Avenger fluff and I guess if the campaign was build around a good vs evil battle with you vs a divine enemy like in the class description, it could be a lot of fun. Not so much if the rest...

    I don't know anything

Rangers and rogues do a lot more damage, particularly with the feats that raise their damage bonus. To acres them puts them at less risk too (rogues are more conditional but do more damage). Other striker classes that do ranged damage have high survivability at range plus have mild controller...

    I don't know anything

Avengers are my least favorite class and their striker mechanic is arguable the least powerful of any of the striker classes. Avengers are like the Spanish Inquisition - they hunt down and destroy their prey. The problem I find is that they can only draw their benefits when engaging in single...

    First time Cleric... suggetions?

In 4e, don't feel compelled to play a cleric if the party needs a healer. The other leader builds (bard, artificer, warlord) can all be very effective. A cleric to me is about a character exploration of faith and a belief system. They can be interesting and challenging to play. Choosing a god...

Playing without a Controller - feasible?

No combat role is essential, but lacking a controller can actually be good as you can have lower numbers of tougher enemies that make fights go faster. Having a fighter pick up cleave or a ranger have twin strike etc as dual target at wills can help deal with minions. I find lack of a leader...

Do you think magic missiles is overpowered?

Magic missile is an at will minion killer. Witch bolt is more powerful as a non minion at will as you only need to hit once and then it deals 1d10 + Int + implement bonus + other bonuses every round as an at will sustain.

    D&D 4E Your 4e Bucket List

I have a player running an essentials bladesinger as one of these. She really likes her character for the dark fey feel and the summonable sword has the right flavor with the bladesinger subclass.

D&D 5E (2014) Who really IS the target audience of D&D Next?

As boredgremlin said, I think the aim of the exercise is to pick up old edition players, especially 3.x and Pathfinder. I also suspect their capacity to recapture large chunks of the legacy crowd will be unsuccessful. That said, as a happy 4e player, I still think there are lessons that can be...

    Getting rid of "Taking 10"

Really? This is the easiest thing to houserule against if you want your players to roll for everything. I think taking 10 makes complete sense or you just get pcs trying again and again and again until they succeed (which is the circumstance when you are supposed to use it).

    10% Controller, 50% Striker, 20% Leader, 20% Defender

This thread has been rehashed countless times. I would add that all 4e classes can effectively be strikers and have the potential to excel in at least one other role. With powers, characters are far more customizable in abilities than 2e.

    PC charisma and inter-PC interactions

Charisma is supposed to represent a combination of appearance, force of personality, charm, and social skill. High Charisma individuals (18+) I feel should be as impressive socially as 18+ Strength PCs at lifting massive objects. A couple of my PCs have 18 Cha, and I tend to have NPCs...

    Pathfinder 1E What's so good/bad about Pathfinder?

All the positive comments encouraged me to look at Pathfinder. The rules scope seems daunting, but I think the archtypes are bursting with flavor. Paizo also does seem to have a loyal and happy community, which is a great thing for roleplaying as a hobby. Thanks everyone!

    Pathfinder 1E What's so good/bad about Pathfinder?

One thing I hear a lot about from 3.5/Pathfinder is the ability to create highly customizable characters compared with other editions. What specifically do you find makes this work so well? Feats, a large range of classes, prestige classes, the multiclassing system, all of the above, or...

    Pathfinder 1E What's so good/bad about Pathfinder?

Background: I'm a 1e, 2e, then 10yr break, then 4e player. Pathfinder players, tell me what you love about your game? Does anything annoy you? Please don't turn this into a things I hate about 4e bagfest!! I'm interested what things about Pathfinder would entice you back to the 5e WOTC fold...

D&D 4E An Olive Branch to 4e Fans: Some Things 5e Should Take From 4e

I scanned this thread for the olive branch to 4e - seems like people again are restating all the things they hate. How about focusing on the positives?
