I started Doomed after re-reading Damned. It's yet another Palahniuk experiment - it's written as blog entries and responses to comments. At first I wasn't into it but I've gotten used to it. That man does some odd stuff.

I have no idea. The merit is obvious, however: If everyone has the same background there's less crap to fight over. It's easier to see people as the same/equal. There's a less easy path to other folks.

I explained that. In another post I also suggested what may replace it: a single culture that's the result of all cultures blending. This requires that everyone give something up, though, and I don't see that ever happening.

I'm sorry but a 70+ year old man just doesn't work in this role. There's no way I'd believe it and I can't imagine many others would either. If you change the script to involve less action I think you'd change the character too much. At the least, I don't think many folks would be interested...

Yep. It's truly amazing to me that people wonder why we treat each other so differently. It's what we want. It shouldn't be but whatever.

Yeah, I was also surprised at the surprise in both of these events (the other was the outdoor 'attack'). In both cases the cat was struck first. What do people expect when they attack a predator? I don't like cats all that much myself but I'm happy these cats acted the way they did.

The whole notion of culture needs to die in a fire. We're so worried about accepting everyone as equal but none of us are willing to give up even a part of what separates us and has since our respective cultures were formed. Meh, if you're always walking on eggshells you're never gonna get...
