D&D 5E (2014) How Would You Run This? (Multiple Saves)

I feel like this is what reactions are for. In battle they are fairly well defined in terms of how they can be used. But outside of combat, such as during the explorations or social pillars, reactions still have a place but lose the definition as to how they are or can be used. Given the...

D&D 5E (2014) How often do characters die in your campaigns?

So it took a long time (ran a campaign for years with no player deaths). But once I had that first PC death, they kinda spiraled into a semi-regular thing. Mind you, I'm not out to kill the PCs. But I've gotten more comfortable with setting up challenges and allowing the players to feel the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is A Blade-Caster Wizard Possible?

I know exactly what you're talking about. There were mechanics for that in 3.5, but I haven't seen any official 5e support to do that. You would need to find something on the DMsGuild or create your own. Whether it could be done in a way that's balanced... probably? I think there are a couple...

    D&D 5E (2014) Boosting Sorcerers, Focus: Fun (+thread)

One issue I have is that Sorcery Points are simultaneously the Sorcerer's version of Arcane Recovery, but ALSO their fuel for Metamagic. So far me, this already puts the Sorcerer at a bit of a disadvantage. This is made even worse, IMO, by the fact that creating a spell slot costs more than the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tasha's Summoning and Sorcerers

I did my own retroactive bonus spells. It wasn't hard, but certainly annoying that WotC clearly recognizes what bonus spells add to a subclass, and now published a book that specifically could have addressed the issue but didn't.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tasha's Summoning and Sorcerers

Mechanically, I don't think there is a reason. My best guess would be that summoning magic is more representative of the intentional study of arcane knowledge and requires exacting execution. When I picture summoning spells, I envision circles of runes and using books full of lore to learn the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Was the Rune Knight (in Tasha's) "over-nerfed"?

Yea, I think this is meant to be reflected in the additional 1d6 damage that you can apply once per turn. I mean, thinking about a fighter that can essentially double his damage for just about every combat, as well as access those rune abilities, would easily put this archetype well above any...

D&D 5E (2014) Keep Calm and Calm Emotions

I agree with the majority here. Calm Emotions suppresses anything that causes the charmed or frightened condition. If a creature is in the area of Calm Emotions and a spell like Fear is cast, those within the area of effect still make their saving throws as normal. They even repeat their saves...

D&D 5E (2014) Barbarian Path of The Wilden

Sounds interesting. You may want to borrow/adjust some mechanics similar to the Path of the Storm Herald. Their aura abilities sound like a good foundation for whip-like vine attacks, and depending on how you execute it could allow for some battlefield control similar to Thorn Whip or Grasp of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Was the Rune Knight (in Tasha's) "over-nerfed"?

Ugh, half my post got cut off. I've added my thoughts regarding Runic Shield and how often Giant's Might should be used and reset. Edit: I also added a proposed adjustment to the Storm Rune and Runic Juggernaut features.

D&D 5E (2014) Proposed Houserule: Warlock Spell Slots

I agree. A couple of my invocations for Pact of Tome resemble a bard's Magical Secrets ability.

    D&D 5E (2014) Was the Rune Knight (in Tasha's) "over-nerfed"?

So a couple of thought I have in terms of adjusting the rune knight. 1) I don't like the crossover between the fighter and barbarian rage. I also don't agree with the runes being level-gated. They should all be within the same relative power scale. So here are a couple of the runes I have...

D&D 5E (2014) Proposed Houserule: Warlock Spell Slots

I don't think it's a problem honestly. The extra spell slot increases their power, sure, but not so much that it will take the spotlight from other players. In one of the games I run I have a number of short rest players (monk, fighter, pugilist, warlock) so something I've done is make a short...

D&D General Who gives demons/devils their (true) name?

I don't think they are given. In the Dresden Files, it suggests that true names are inherent to a creature's nature. Mortals also have true names, but unlike devils or demons, mortals have the capacity for change which can alter a true name to varying degrees. Not sure if there is lore...

D&D 5E (2014) Problems with Polymorph, True Polymorph, and Shapechange

Alright, I think I've managed to tackle Shapechange. Below is my revised version, and below that are some of my thoughts and reasons: Shapechange 9th-level transmutation Casting Time: 1 action Range: Self Components: V, S, M (a jade circlet worth at least 1,500gp, which you must place on your...

D&D 5E (2014) Problems with Polymorph, True Polymorph, and Shapechange

@NotAYakk - I honestly think we are at an impasse. It's clear that you are much more simulationist in how you approach the game. And that's great and I wish you well with that! We are coming from different approaches and are not going to see eye to eye. But that is not what I'm trying to do. I'm...

D&D 5E (2014) Problems with Polymorph, True Polymorph, and Shapechange

I'm sure the designers did not just start with the fiction and work from there. D&D is a Role Playing Game. You can't ignore the aspect of the game, and while the fiction can guide the mechanical design, that is not the only consideration. I would say it is a parallel process, rather than...

D&D 5E (2014) Problems with Polymorph, True Polymorph, and Shapechange

Sorry, but help me understand. When you look at a wolf stat block, what about it makes it inherently a wolf? What about the T-Rex or Mammoth stat blocks makes them those creatures? Aside from calling it a beast type versus a construct, why is the giant ape stat block a giant ape versus a...

D&D 5E (2014) Problems with Polymorph, True Polymorph, and Shapechange

Because then it not only adds complexity, but the need to create additional spells for every imaginable creature type. The original Polymorph is already among one of the most complicated spells due to its reliance on the Monster Manual and any other officially released beast. My version allows...

D&D 5E (2014) Problems with Polymorph, True Polymorph, and Shapechange

I did create some concrete forms. The primary way this spell is used is for combat, exploration/utility, or to incapacitate a single enemy. I just distilled it down into these basic components. I don't think anything more is really necessary. But that's just me.
