D&D 5E (2014) Players roll all the dice and Active defenses

@Xeviat have you had a chance to check out Pathfinder 2e? I haven't seen it myself, but from some of the reviews I've seen it may be helpful to yoink some of the ways they do defenses and such, or even inspire some more novel approaches that can be adapted in to 5e.

    D&D 5E (2014) Cleric Love Domain Adjustments

I understand what you're saying, and I could see the argument going either way. But still what you have at its core is a cleric. They aren't utilizing the power of love through their own charisma or power of seduction. They are praying to a god of love to grant them a piece of their divine spark...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

Very true. Thanks for pointing it out (dontcha hate blind spots!). A fair point. But then, Dueling and Archery provide flat bonuses and lots of people seem to be pretty happy with them. I guess it just boils down to play style. Do you want more dynamic or even active fighting styles (the...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

I like where you're headed, @Tony Vargas. One thing I think is important to consider is that Protection is the only fighting style that requires conditions that may be outside of the player's control. Generally a player will have control over the type of weapon they use. But if someone take the...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

@NotAYakk If that's how you want to do it, more power to you! But such an approach is really contrary to the current 5e design philosophy of reducing complexity. Especially for the fighter class, which many would argue was built to be simplified as a gateway class for beginners. Another concern...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

The way that I play it, the TWF Style does not require the bonus action to use. So technically, a fighter wielding the appropriate weapons can use their bonus action for another attack. But without feat investment, it is limited to max 1d6 weapons. But I will say I have made SIGNIFICANT changes...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

@Tony Vargas That would certainly work. But I think I'm starting to lean towards not using reactions for this Fighting Style. Each fighting style seems to focus on providing a passive bonus in some way. Dueling give +2 to damage, GWF gives rerolls on 1 or 2, Archery is a flat +2 to attack...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

Whoa. First off, why would you base it off using two powerful magic weapons? Are you using similar magic weapons in the calculations of the other styles? It's not really clear in your numbers. I think a more useful analysis is with typical non-magic weapons of the given type associated with the...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

I don't remember where I posted it, but this is what I settled on: Two-Weapon Fighting Style When you take the attack action wielding two weapons and miss with your main weapon attacks, you may make one weapon attack with your off-hand weapon for each missed attack. If you hit with your...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

You know, as I'm thinking about it maybe what I proposed above would work better as a feat, similar to how TWF has Dual Wielder, Great Weapon Fighting has Great Weapon Master, and Archery has Sharp Shooter. Thinking even more, I'm reminded of the Wildhunt shifter ability. Maybe the Protection...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

Cunning Action doesn't grant Dodge. Just Dash, Disengage, or Hide. A monk could do it that way, but need to spend a ki point each time.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

I agree that it is a bit more clunky and complicated than the other styles. But part of that is because I have a sense that 5e in general is designed more for offense than defense. The current protection style doesn't seem to play any differently than other fighters, except they get to...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts about the Protection Fighting Style

So I've been thinking about the Protection Fighting Style. Like the Defense and Two-Weapon Fighting Styles, it does not scale with the number of attacks or with Action Surge. I've found a way to fix Two-Weapon Fighting on this front. Now I'd like to find a way to have the Protection Style scale...

D&D 5E (2014) Making Thrown Weapon Attacks Melee Attacks

I'm less concerned about balance. I do care about balance and I understand very well that both barbarians and paladins are designed strictly for melee. What I am proposing is ways to increase player enjoyment and reduce the need for system mastery. Can barbarians or paladins be built to allow...

D&D 5E (2014) Making Thrown Weapon Attacks Melee Attacks

I'm not saying that barbarians can't use ranged weapons. I'm saying that none of their core class abilities support their being able to use class abilities with such weapons. You cannot apply rage damage bonus or reckless attack to a ranged attack, even when made with a thrown weapon. To me, not...

D&D 5E (2014) Making Thrown Weapon Attacks Melee Attacks

Plus since darts are considered monk weapons, there is mechanical options for them to use their martial arts abilities with ranged weapons. Pretty much all spellcasters have ranged and melee martial cantrip options, and all spellcasters have spell options for support, melee, or range. Fighters...

D&D 5E (2014) Fallen Celestials and (the lack of) Ascended Fiends

I recommend reading God's Demon. Great book about the politics of the demons of hell and the path one demon takes towards redemption. But overall, I think it isn't really talked about much in D&D because stories are made for heroes to fight villains. SO much of the focus is setting up heroes...

D&D 5E (2014) Making Thrown Weapon Attacks Melee Attacks

Sure, but I see it two ways. Yes, you can't be good or effective in every situation for mechanical balance. But also, if you are in a situation in which you can't contribute at all, it becomes much less fun. This is doubly so because most core classes (before subclasses) seem to have both melee...
