Making a homebrew system; need help w/ optimizing and balancing system itself (percentile)

With my first point I'm trying to say that, instead of giving characters increased Talents and Defences when they level up, give them something else. Then you won't have to worry about high numbers but high-level characters will be much more potent than lower-level ones. So instead of 90%...

Making a homebrew system; need help w/ optimizing and balancing system itself (percentile)

    1. You don't need to increase defences as much as you are now because you're giving out other abilities. 2. If you can already halve someone's defences, what's the problem with defences? You're just making a system where the die roll is secondary to the ability to distract someone. (Which...

Making a homebrew system; need help w/ optimizing and balancing system itself (percentile)

How about this: 3. Give high-level characters special abilities. A lateral increase instead of a vertical increase. 4. Reduce the difficulty when there are advantages, such as flanking, higher ground, outnumbering, etc. eg. The guy who has 90% blocking might see it reduced to 70% when...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Quinn won't resist being pulled towards safety.
  6. LostSoul

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Quinn drags himself away from the onrushing torrent as fast as he can, trying to rub life back into his frozen legs, but the chill will not leave him. Perhaps his new dark patron is working its will upon him... Standard action: Move to D15 Move action: Move to B15 Saving Throw (1d20=1) Edit...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Nah, now that the Dryad has been defeated there's no reason for "Sehanine" to hang around. I did forget to make a saving throw against the slow effect; I'll edit my post.
  8. LostSoul

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Quinn will take his second wind. That's pretty much it. Saving Throw (1d20=4)

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Good point. I mostly agree. I am not sure there's much to be gained by using them. I'd probably end up hacking together something my own. (In 3E I just make the rolls behind the screen. A pretty simple hack, if you can call it that!)

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Ahnehnois - thanks for the reply. Very succinct. I think you've covered why/how you'd want to make such rulings. (I like to play what you'd call antagonistic DMing, so our preferences differ.) I wonder - how do you feel about D&D Next's exploration rules? I imagine it'd be along the same...

Beyond Old and New School - "The Secret That Was Lost"

I think that WotC-D&D asked players to make different choices than TSR-D&D did. Obviously I think it's the system that did so. In my opinion it's the "build" that makes the difference.

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Small note: Quinn actually moved out of the zone in his last turn - he's in F15, not F13. He can use a healing surge on his turn. He'll probably try to bargain with the patron to end the zone, unless someone else asks for his aid. (I believe that the patron powers the spell, and unless the...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Why do you think that? Or rather: In what way does it best serve the game? In many games that I've played, that ability is not a "very small niche". It's been an important part of exploring a dungeon. Normally we'd handle it like this: Player: (Thinking there's a secret door nearby) Do I...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

    Her aching heart (2d8+6=21)
  15. LostSoul

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

    1) I'll take the reformation of character. That is a powerful reward cycle at work! As a side note, I notice that Quinn has felt a softening of his nihilism, which was probably not that evident in his last action but would probably reveal itself in his interactions with the patron. 2) I don't...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Quinn struggles to stay on his feet as the cold numbs him, and he drags his near-frozen body to F15. The dryad appears to be faltering with the promise of forgiveness. Quinn tries to recall a moment in Sehanine's long-storied history where she accepted the fallen back into her loving embrace...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

    This is cool.

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Manbearcat I'll just use Heroic Surge. Against the two swarms, who are attacking what they think is a hated enemy: S1; S2 (1d20+18=35, 1d20+18=28) That should hit them both, and move S1 to H13, S2 to H14.
  19. LostSoul

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Manbearcat I need to read more closely! Sorry about that. As the swarm approaches Quinn he'll vanish and shift to F13. I'll put the Visions of Avarice in I14, which should reach the dryad in G10, and pull her towards the pool. (I believe I can pull her 6 squares.) As Quinn casts his...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Yup, these sorts of questions are a staple of indie play. I find that, as you get more comfortable with the people that you're playing with, you don't need to ask these questions as often. (This set of rolls is going to be pretty intense! I'll do pretty much what you said - Arcana check for...
