The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Questions: How much backstory authority to I have? I have an idea to use Visions of Avarice on the dryad to present an image of Sehanine forgiving her. Which might provide us with leverage to turn this fight into a parley. Would that be considered an automatic failure, since I'm targeting the...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Okay, makes sense. Hopefully I can change some of that through my actions later on in the challenge. I'll use Hypnotism to bring him next to me and slap him in the face, showing my mettle against this true warrior.

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Thanks for the answers! I like how the DC is set, it keeps me from having to track skill uses. On a side note, my PC in a 3.5 game killed The Queen of Air and Darkness, married her daughter, and took her throne. (It's a pretty crazy story.) Perception (1d20+12=19) Looks like I don't see...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Manbearcat : A few questions. 1. What kind of creatures are the swarms? 2. What skills are available that aren't at the Hard DC? Are implement attacks against a target's Will or the Hard DC? 3. Can I call on advantages? I think that's it. As for the dryad... 1. How does she...

Need a suitably evil plan for a villain.

What would happen if Jehova harmed or killed him?

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Yep! Hopefully Lucann will be able to bring her back to the light; I'll take on her patron and we can use that connection to our own ends (hopefully!). Since Quinn doesn't have rage in him (only emptiness, at least now), he figures he can deal with it. He's probably wrong, but we'll see...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Initiative (1d20+7=9) "No, Lucann - she's right. If the King and us - us humans - can turn on ourselves so easily, we deserve what she's wrought. She did not do this herself. It's our own weakness that brought this. Quinn turns to the dryad. "I would pledge myself to you, as your...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Since he's the with the Court Mage I'll go for the companion character set-up. 1. I think he's in the Royal Gardens, a large space open to the sky nearby, with lots of trees & flowers & some vegetables. And probably a gazebo. 2. Lucann's probably better at this, but I'll try to "follow the...

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

The way I see it, the PC always "hits" in the game world because they've done damage. Which makes it confusing, but that doesn't mean it's dissociated, just abstract & over-the-top. I don't see how this is different from normal narration of HP loss.

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

This mechanic isn't dissociated: you make an attack, you always deal damage at least some damage. It's clearly tied to the game world (as much as any melee attack is).

Quinn will go after the Court Mage if Lucann does; otherwise he'll stick with the group.

[I have no desire to go running after this guy, even if it means the King dies. We can deal with the Queen.] "Hold, friends," Quinn says. "We don't know if we can trust this man. Something foul has taken control of this court; we don't want to run blindly into its trap."

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

"My Lord," Quinn says, magic filling his words, "please bring us to the Court Mage. He has this to answer for." Quinn points at the monstrosity before his feet. "And that, too, I suppose." He motions at the melting pool of war troll. "Please make sure the King is there. Only he has the...

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

"Your beasts are causing trouble, my lord", Quinn says as he works his magic. "Perhaps you should deal with them." [Intent: I want to know if the Lord Chamberlain is directing these beasts against the people here. Task: I'm casting the Charm of Misplaced Wrath to draw the war troll towards...

Snake men. For some reason that works for me.

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L November 4th Warlock Design

What I really want to see is the patron demanding something of the PC in order for the PC to have these powers.

Quinn rolls his eyes. Mechanics: He's opting out of the power bonus (if possible). Why? Well, he wouldn't buy it. I'm interested in how the reward system might reflect that action.

The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

"I had a run-in with the Court Mage," Quinn says. "Someone to be feared. His bodyguard thinks that the kingdom is going to surrender. He and this sidhe are probably behind it. I doubt that we'll be able to talk them out of whatever plan they have. "I have a trick or two, but keep your...
