D&D 5E (2014) My Review of Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes is Live will also answer any questions

Any interesting stuff about gnomes? I've liked the preview stuff about halflings, talking about how they fit into the universe, and I feel like gnomes need that sort of clarification in 5E. Making them the secretive fey race in 4E was a cool direction, but they seem to have steered away from...

Modi and Magni --- Northman Brothers

Trying to work through a character idea . . . play as two brothers, inspired by the mythological Thor's sons, but probably ending up somewhere between Ragnar's boys on "Vikings" and the Asgardian shenanigans of "Thor: Ragnarok." Anyway . . . Magni is "Strength." That's easy enough . . ...

Official Character Sheets for Captains Kirk, Picard and Other Enterprise Crew

I think I found a mistake: they have Lt. Sulu able to cast fireball as a 9th level wizard. I'm pretty sure that's non-canon.

Official Character Sheets for Captains Kirk, Picard and Other Enterprise Crew

Astrophysics is a Picard focus? I dunno, guys . . . is that like a "Tapestry" reference or something?

D&D 5E (2014) Quick question re: monsters as PCs

Good thoughts, all. I would do something like this for a one-shot, so advancement is less of an issue. I would lean toward doing advancement on an ad hoc basis, maybe using the monster scaling rules as guidelines.

D&D 5E (2014) is the dodge action broken?

Yeah, it's really "full defense" rather than dodging. Not necessarily acrobatics --- could be turtling up behind your shield, or parrying, or whatever makes sense.

D&D 5E (2014) Quick question re: monsters as PCs

Is there any kind of quick and dirty rule of thumb for what level of challenge rating corresponds to what level of PC? I.e., if I wanted to throw a gold dragon wyrmling (challenge rating 3) into a PC group, what level should those other PCs be? Just for one-shots, you understand.

    D&D 5E (2014) Meat Grinder Mode?

In meat grinder mode, a death saving throw succeeds on a roll of 15 (instead of 10) or higher. A character playing an adventure in meat grinder mode earns 10% more XP and gp. The character can potentially receive more than an adventure’s normal maximum reward. This option is available only while...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sword & Sorcery vs. Heroic Fantasy

I would argue that one of the key characteristics of D&D is that it's always been this gumbo of every subgenre of pre-1975 fantasy fiction that ends up tasting like all of them and none of them simultaneously. It has always been Tolkien and Howard and Lieber and Lovecraft and Moorcock all in...

Take Me Down To Cthulhu City

Or: after you encounter a few things Man Was Not Meant To Know and the old sanity points start eroding, normal life becomes out of the question. You fall in with a group of like-minded knights of the road. They go where they are needed, riding the rails and reading the signs. They walk on...

Take Me Down To Cthulhu City

Well, I sprung for the hard copy, and a PDF of the "Trail" corebook, and I'm about thirty minutes into both PDFs. Fine stuff. I like that "hobo" is a featured character background. Hobos vs. Great Old Ones. If that doesn't sound like a great campaign, you need a different hobby.

Take Me Down To Cthulhu City

Looks like you get a PDF when you order the hard copy, but no PDF only option? Sounds mighty fine, this setting.

D&D 5E (2014) Players of EN World: Tell us about your biggest in-game screw up.

As a DM, I killed a PC elf named Blackleaf, and then the player also died by his own hand. This was back in the eighties, when that sort of thing happened all the time, but it still haunts me.

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar: Path of the Zealot

That would work. I was thinking about the old 3.0 Book of Exalted Deeds and some of the chaotic good entities therein, which would be good options if you wanted to dial down the Vikingness a little. A follower of Garagos would also be great. He's an orc or half-orc who experienced a religious...

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar: Path of the Zealot

I like this path. Play a divinely-inspired berserker who throws himself into glorious battle, eager to slay and be slain and abide forever in Valhalla.
