    August 2012--Menzoberranzan: City of Intrigue

It will be interesting to see just how drow-o-centric this setting is. With the time skip and the massive upheavals in the cosmic order, Menzoberranzan may be very different from earlier editions. You know, I never really liked drow as Chaotic Evil. I see much more potential in playing them...

This guy has Heroes of the Feywild.

I'm liking the skald. Always wanted a low-magic sage or storyteller type character, and I'm a big fan of the lazy warlord build . . . so are we calling this "lazybard" now? Is that a thing?

    Monk Basics is up!

Glad to see the monk unarmed strike become available to other classes. Goes nice with brawler fighters, as already noted. You can do a real nice arena fighter build with this, too --- a Jackie Chan type who fight unarmed, or with improvised weapons, or with whatever exotic wu shu hoo-hah he...

What are some good monk hybrids for a Kara Tur kung fu game?

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I'm liking the monk/warden combo from a thematic standpoint --- the "Form of . . ." daily powers all read like nature-based martial arts techniques. For the controller, monk/invoker might hit that holy warrior sweet spot. It's a tougher build to make work...

What are some good monk hybrids for a Kara Tur kung fu game?

My notion is that I could do that new Kara-Tur adventure with three characters, all monk hybrids --- a striker/defender, a striker/controller, and a striker/leader. Any ideas?

    Heroes of the Feywild Excerpts

It's good game design . . . I remember back in the day, with races like kender and gulley dwarves and even drow, and the whole alignment of Chaotic Neutral, where the books were damn near instructing the player to ruin the game for everyone whenever possible.

    Heroes of the Feywild Excerpts

I'd be interested in knowing the thought process there. I'd guess it's a matter of encouraging a more nuanced approach to the roleplaying. If the default satyr PC is nothing but frolicking and fornicating with the occasional homicidal rage, it could get pretty old pretty quick. But throw in...

Ecology of the Hengeyokai (+ New Race Option!)

Goes nice with a party of pixies, too. I might have to pitch a "Shifters of Kara-Tur" article and do that five-animals-style idea . . .

Ecology of the Hengeyokai (+ New Race Option!)

This also would work as a variant shifter with the Tiny form as a new racial ability option, sure. The advantage is that you get access to the existing feats and such for shifters. The real question is whether it's a single subrace or a slew of them. This article is a pretty faithful update...

Ecology of the Hengeyokai (+ New Race Option!)

Right . . . didn't say that in my first post, but I thought it.

Ecology of the Hengeyokai (+ New Race Option!)

Done. I like having the Tiny beast form for "flight," the hybrid for "fight," and the human form as camouflage.

    Heroes of the Feywild Excerpts

Indeed. Which I guess is how I ended up with "salvage" in an earlier post . . . there are a few game elements like runepriests where I feel like I'm on the fence about whether its (1) a misfire that doesn't merit additional attention, or (2) untapped potential that just needs a little love.

    Heroes of the Feywild Excerpts

I'm not saying that we should ever expect shardminds and seekers to overtake dwarves and wizards in popularity, but I think that any concept that's worth adding to the game will spark new ideas, introduce new synergies with existing material, and just otherwise merit some kind of followup.

Ecology of the Hengeyokai (+ New Race Option!)

Seems like there should be access to the druid Beast Form powers and feats, doesn't it?

    Heroes of the Feywild Excerpts

Seems like some races and classes get support because they are popular, and are popular because they get support. There are a few concepts out there which are so underdeveloped that it's easy to dismiss them as bad ideas or false starts or lungfish, rightfully abandoned . . . but a couple of...

    The Pixie is up!

Between that and their ability to shrink objects, I am beginning to suspect these pixies are unrealistic.

    The Pixie is up!

Now I gotta pitch a Dragon article on the pixies of Athas --- "Sectaurs" type little bastards made out of chitin, arcane magic, and angry.

    The Pixie is up!

Yep. They dart in like hummingbirds, unleash pixie steel, and dart back out again. Stay up close and you get squashed, and even if the Big Folk miss, there's backdrafts that can knock you right out of the air. Countless generations of adaptation in the magic-rich Feywild give some unique...

I SAID GOOD DAY! Nice work, WotC.

    Artificers in the Realms article

Except Hammer of Gond isn't the name of a magic weapon --- it's a feat granting proficiency with warhammer, and the ability to use same as a thrown weapon. Nice feat. I like having a smart guy / leader type who occasionally solves a problem by throwing a hammer at it.
