    Revisionist game publishing

As to "adventure and the shared world in which they took place," I would take the non-crunch portions of DMG 4.0 and DMG2 4.0 over anything that was ever published for first edition. 4th Edition provides both players and DMs a wealth of advice about how to actually run an entertaining game...

Actually, I agree on the point that giving a kobold PC darkvision would be just fine. Doesn't seem like a dealbreaker to me at all. I might impose a feat tax --- regular PC kobold has low-light, but there's a racial feat that upgrades it to darkvision. Or it might be something that could be...

    Revisionist game publishing

Except you don't need to cover every kobold . . . just every kobold PC. And I can't imagine there are such huge swarms of those in any campaign that the players and DM can't come up with some sort of satisfying explanation regarding the PC's impaired vision. Other alternatives would be to...

    Revisionist game publishing

Again, I think that since PC rules only apply to PCs, the chances of there being even a single darkblind kobold in the whole campaign world are pretty low. In D&D, PCs are always exceptional. Usually superior to the typical member of their race, but sometimes, for game balance, they have a...

    Revisionist game publishing

I don't need a reason why every possible kobold PC lacks darkvision . . . I just need an explanation for the particular kobold PC that comes to my game table. So for that character, it could be a birth defect, the result of an injury, a variant bloodline, or too much daylight over the years...

    PHB3 Debut: Ardent Speculation

Actually, it's clear to me that in 4th Edition D&D, characters understand that a certain mix of abilities makes for a good party. I wouldn't find it too out of line for in-character dialogue to include discussion of who's going to be the new striker now that the dwarf got killed, or whether...

    Revisionist game publishing

I'm skeptical of players' appeals to verisimilitude which, if implemented, would coincidentally confer a major game advantage to the PCs. Personally, I would have no problem with minotaurs all wielding big honking weapons, but leaving the "size" (in game terms) of those weapons rather...

Dragon 382 - Winning Races: Dusk Elf

Wouldn't work. In PoLand, the authorities are aware that the experience points from a crime spree can sometimes cause a thief to change tint, sprout wings, ascend to godhood, etc.

Dragon 382 - Winning Races: Dusk Elf

I like both the article and the possibility that we will see more "subraces" handled in this manner. More of a "reskinning" than a whole new race . . . makes a lot of sense. I'd like to see the half-eladrin handled in the same manner, actually --- a variant half-elf with a new feat chain and...

ALCHEMIST in Resa & Kiel article

It's just sort of old news at this point. Typo noted, consensus reached.

Wild Shape, Spirit Companions, and Flight

Tell me if this is correct . . . Neither wild shaped druids nor spirit companions gain any special movement abilities as a result of the form they take. So my swarm druid who turns into a swarm of bees tries to fly over a pit . . . and he falls. My eagle spirit companion might be visualized...

    The Vistani Return

These inspired me to get out "Van Richten's Guide to the Vistani" for the first time in ten years or so. Great book, and great articles. Gypsies are the new pirates.

    Waiting for the Seeker

Although this sounds interesting, it's also a strange and narrow niche. "Ranged divine controller" doesn't necessarily conjur up a broad range of character builds, at least to me. I sort of felt that way about swordmages, too, but gish classes have deep roots in this game . . . "Zen archer"...

Primal Power Excerpt: The Swarm Druid

One potential bit of oddness --- movement. Is your movement at all affected by the fact that you are a cloud of bees? Do you still "walk"? Fall into holes? Sink in water? Make an Athletics check to climb walls?

Primal Power Excerpt: The Swarm Druid

I just like the idea of guy who screams, "I AM MADE OF BEES!" and then turns into bees and shoots bees at people and so forth. Also . . . a myrmidon. Fighter / druid hybrid who turns into a swarm of ants. Cool.

    DMG2 Excerpt: Companion Characters

It's nice that they are upfront about certain abilities --- extra senses, flight, etc. --- being gamebreakers. In 3rd Edition, the tendency would've been to let you play a flying character, but with an ECL that crippled his effectiveness.

    DMG2 Excerpt: Companion Characters

Fascinating article. Maybe a first step toward "monster" PCs? I'm running an occasional one-shot for my brother-in-law and his two young sons . . . my thought is to maybe give each of the boys a companion, and have dad play a leader character. That way, the boys get to do most of the cool...
